The Secret My Husband Took to His Grave

Part 2: The Secret My Husband Took to His Grave

The woman looked at me for several seconds before finally opening the envelope.

Inside was a thick stack of documents.

My hands began shaking.

“What is this?”

She glanced toward the funeral room.

>

“My name is Evelyn Carter. I worked with Richard for almost twenty years.”

>

I stared at her.

“Worked with him doing what?”

She took a slow breath.

“Financial investigations.”

My stomach tightened.

“Richard wasn’t cheating on you because he had fallen in love with another woman.”

I felt my heart stop.

“Then why did he say he was?”

Evelyn looked down at the papers.

“Because he wanted you to hate him.”

I couldn’t speak.

She continued.

“Five years before his death, Richard discovered that someone had been stealing money from a company he worked for. A very large amount of money.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Everything.”

She handed me a document.

It showed a life insurance policy.

My name was listed as the beneficiary.

I stared at the amount.

Nearly $2.4 million.

I looked at Evelyn in disbelief.

“Richard never told me about this.”

“He couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because the people responsible for the financial crime were threatening your family.”

My hands went numb.

Evelyn explained that Richard had been secretly cooperating with investigators.

But the people involved had discovered where he lived.

They knew about me.

They knew about our children.

And Richard became terrified that staying married to me would put me in danger.

“So he created the affair?” I whispered.

Evelyn nodded.

“He wanted everyone—including you—to believe he was a terrible husband.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“But why give me the house and our savings?”

“Because he wanted you financially independent before anything happened to him.”

I sat down.

For five years, I had believed Richard had betrayed me.

I had spent five years trying to forget him.

And all that time, he had apparently been protecting me.

But Evelyn wasn’t finished.

She pulled another document from the envelope.

“This is the reason I came to the funeral.”

I looked at the page.

It was a letter written in Richard’s handwriting.

My name was written across the front.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

The first line destroyed me.

“My love, if you’re reading this, I didn’t get the chance to tell you the truth.”

I covered my mouth.

Then I read the next sentence.

“I never stopped loving you.”

I began crying uncontrollably.

But the final paragraph was even more shocking.

Richard had written that the woman he claimed to have an affair with had never been his lover.

She was actually an undercover investigator helping him uncover the people who had threatened our family.

And then came the part I couldn’t understand.

Richard wrote:

“There is one person you must never trust.”

I looked at Evelyn.

She suddenly became pale.

“Who?” I whispered.

She pointed toward the funeral room.

“Your oldest son.”

My blood ran cold.

Because my son had been standing only a few feet away the entire time.

And when I looked through the doorway, I realized he had been watching us.
