Part 2: What I Found Attached to the Sheet Made Me Question Everything
I stood completely still.
At first, I couldn’t understand what I was looking at.
Something small and white was attached to the sheet near my husband’s side of the bed.
I stepped closer.
It was a folded piece of paper, held in place by a tiny safety pin.
My heart began pounding.
Why would anyone leave a note on our wedding bed?
I carefully removed it.
There were only three words written on the outside:
“Read this alone.”
I looked at my husband.
He was still asleep.
My mother-in-law was sitting on the edge of the bed, facing the window.
But suddenly, she turned around.
Our eyes met.
Her expression was completely different from the night before.
She wasn’t drunk.
She wasn’t confused.
She was wide awake.
And she looked terrified.
“Where did you get that?” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“You know what this is?”
She immediately stood.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
My voice surprised even me.
For the first time since I had entered this family, I refused to obey her.
I opened the note.
The first sentence made my blood run cold.
“Your husband is not who you think he is.”
I looked at my sleeping husband.
Then I read the next line.
“Ask him why your wedding documents were changed yesterday.”
My hands began trembling.
“What documents?”
My mother-in-law covered her face.
Then she whispered something I will never forget.
“Because I tried to stop him.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“What are you talking about?”
She looked at her son.
“He told me you could never know the truth.”
Suddenly, my husband opened his eyes.
He saw the note in my hand.
His face went completely pale.
He sat up.
“Where did you get that?”
I stepped backward.
“It was attached to our sheet.”
He looked at his mother.
She began crying.
Then my husband said something that shattered everything I thought I knew about my wedding.
“Mom, you promised you wouldn’t tell her.”
I stared at both of them.
“Tell me what?”
Neither answered.
I demanded the truth.
Finally, my mother-in-law walked toward the dresser and pulled out a thick folder.
She handed it to me.
Inside were copies of our marriage documents.
But there was something wrong.
My name appeared on several pages.
Yet the signature beside it wasn’t mine.
Someone had signed my name without my permission.
And underneath those documents was a second envelope.
My mother-in-law looked directly into my eyes.
“That is why I needed to sleep in this room last night.”
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a bank statement showing a huge transfer made only hours before our wedding.
The recipient was my husband’s account.
But the money hadn’t come from his family.
It had come from my own inheritance.
I looked at my husband.
“Why did you transfer my money?”
He said nothing.
Then my mother-in-law whispered:
“Because your husband didn’t marry you for love.”
My entire body went cold.
And before I could ask another question, my husband finally admitted the one secret that had been hidden from me since the day we met.
