WHAT I FOUND ON THAT WHITE SHEET EXPOSED THE SECRET THEY HAD BEEN HIDING

PART 2: WHAT I FOUND ON THAT WHITE SHEET EXPOSED THE SECRET THEY HAD BEEN HIDING

On the white sheet… there was a tiny silver key.

I stared at it, completely confused.

For a moment, I thought I had imagined it.

Then I noticed something else.

>

A small piece of paper had been folded underneath the pillow.

>

My husband was still asleep.

My mother-in-law was lying beside him with her back turned toward me.

I quietly picked up the paper.

There were only four words written on it:

“CHECK THE LOCKED ROOM.”

My heart began racing.

I looked toward the hallway.

There was only one locked room in the entire house.

The room my husband had told me never to enter.

I slipped the key into my pocket and walked downstairs without waking either of them.

For the first time since the wedding, I realized something terrifying.

My mother-in-law hadn’t been drunk.

She had been pretending.

And my husband had known.

I reached the end of the hallway and stood in front of the locked door.

My hands were shaking as I inserted the silver key.

Click.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room filled with old boxes, photographs, bank statements, and documents.

Then I saw something that made my knees nearly give out.

There was a photograph of my husband standing beside another woman.

The date written on the back was from three years before our wedding.

But that wasn’t what shocked me.

The woman was my mother-in-law’s younger sister.

And beside the photograph was a birth certificate.

I picked it up.

The name of the father was my husband’s name.

I couldn’t breathe.

My husband had a child.

And apparently, his entire family had been hiding it from me.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned around.

My mother-in-law was standing in the doorway.

She wasn’t drunk anymore.

Her face was completely serious.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”

I stepped backward.

“Why did you bring me into this family if you were hiding all of this?”

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she whispered:

“Because you were never supposed to be his wife.”

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?”

She closed the door behind her.

“It means your wedding was never about love.”

Before I could ask another question, my husband appeared at the end of the hallway.

He had heard everything.

He looked at me.

Then at the documents in my hands.

And instead of denying them, he whispered:

“Now you finally know why I needed you to marry me.”

I couldn’t move.

Because suddenly, the wedding night I thought had been ruined by a drunken mother-in-law…

looked like the beginning of a plan that had been prepared long before I ever walked down the aisle.
