THE NURSE HANDED ME A FILE — AND I FINALLY LEARNED WHY SOPHIE HAD PUSHED ME AWAY

PART 2: THE NURSE HANDED ME A FILE — AND I FINALLY LEARNED WHY SOPHIE HAD PUSHED ME AWAY

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

She glanced at Sophie, then back at me.

“Mr. Walker, Sophie listed you as her emergency contact.”

I stared at her.

>

“She did?”

>

Sophie immediately whispered, “I didn’t think you’d still come.”

My chest tightened.

“Come? Sophie, what is happening?”

The nurse handed me a folder.

“We need to discuss her condition with someone close to her.”

I opened it.

The first page contained a diagnosis.

I read it once.

Then again.

My hands began shaking.

Sophie had been diagnosed with a serious autoimmune illness months before our divorce.

Months.

She had known while I was complaining that she was distant.

She had known while I was staying late at work.

She had known while I was telling myself that she didn’t love me anymore.

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because you were already exhausted.”

“That wasn’t your decision to make.”

She looked down.

“You wanted children so badly, Ethan.”

My heart broke.

“What does that have to do with this?”

She swallowed hard.

“After we lost the second pregnancy, the doctors discovered something was wrong with me.”

She explained that the pregnancy losses had led to additional testing.

That’s when the doctors discovered the condition.

But instead of telling me, Sophie convinced herself that she had already taken enough from me.

“I thought you’d look at me differently.”

I stepped closer.

“Sophie…”

She shook her head.

“You wanted a wife who could give you a family. I was afraid that if you knew I might never be healthy enough to have children, you’d stay out of guilt.”

Suddenly, every argument we had replayed in my mind.

The nights she cried silently.

The mornings she said she was tired.

The appointments she claimed were “just routine.”

The way she had stopped asking me to come with her.

I had interpreted all of it as rejection.

But she had been terrified.

Then the nurse quietly said something that made me freeze.

“There’s another reason we contacted you.”

I looked at her.

She handed me another document.

It was an emergency authorization form.

Sophie had written my name.

“If something happens to me,” she had written, “Ethan should be told.”

I couldn’t hold back my tears.

“You still trusted me?”

Sophie looked at me.

“I never stopped loving you.”

That sentence destroyed me.

Because I realized our marriage hadn’t ended because we stopped loving each other.

It had ended because we stopped telling each other the truth.

I sat beside her.

“I thought you wanted me gone.”

“I thought you wanted to be free.”

We both laughed through our tears.

Then Sophie reached for my hand.

“I didn’t want you to watch me become sick.”

I squeezed her fingers.

“You should have let me choose.”

For the first time in months, she looked directly into my eyes.

“You’re right.”

The next morning, I called my attorney.

Not to undo the divorce.

Not yet.

I simply asked what my options were.

Because there was something I finally understood.

A divorce can end a marriage on paper.

It doesn’t erase five years of love.

It doesn’t erase promises.

And it certainly doesn’t mean you stop caring when the person you once called your wife is lying alone in a hospital bed.

I began taking Sophie to appointments.

I sat beside her during treatments.

I brought her favorite coffee.

And slowly, she started telling me everything she had been too afraid to say.

But there was one final piece of her story she still hadn’t told me.

One night, as I was preparing to leave the hospital, Sophie grabbed my wrist.

“Ethan, there’s something else.”

I turned around.

Her eyes filled with fear.

“The doctors found something on my latest scan.”

She paused.

“And they think it may be connected to the reason we lost our babies.”

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly, our entire past had a new question hanging over it.

And this time, neither of us was willing to run away from the answer.
