PART 2 — MY SON THOUGHT HE HAD TAKEN EVERYTHING… UNTIL MY LAWYER OPENED THE FOLDER
I walked for nearly twenty minutes before I heard an engine behind me.
For a moment, I thought my son had come back.
He hadn’t.
A silver sedan pulled onto the shoulder and stopped beside me.
The driver’s door opened.
A woman in her late sixties stepped out.
She looked familiar.
Very familiar.
“Mrs. Bennett?”
I froze.
“Yes?”
She smiled gently.
“My name is Margaret Hayes. Your husband hired me three years ago.”
My heart skipped.
“My husband?”
She nodded.
“He told me that if anything happened to him, I was to find you before anyone else did.”
I stared at her.
“What did he know?”
Margaret looked toward the road where my son’s SUV had disappeared.
“He knew your children might try to take control of everything.”
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
She opened the passenger door.
“Please get in. There’s something you need to see.”
I climbed into the car.
Inside was a leather briefcase.
Margaret placed it on her lap and opened it.
The first document was a copy of our house deed.
I recognized my husband’s signature.
But beneath it was something I had never seen before.
A transfer agreement.
My name was listed as the sole beneficiary.
I looked at Margaret.
“Why didn’t I know about this?”
“Because your husband specifically instructed me not to tell you unless he died.”
She pulled out another document.
Then another.
And another.
My hands began trembling.
“The business?”
“Your husband transferred controlling ownership to you six months before his death.”
I stared at her in disbelief.
“But my son said it was his.”
Margaret gave me a sad smile.
“Your son doesn’t know what his father changed.”
I suddenly remembered the sharp corner inside my purse.
I pulled it out.
It was a small key.
My husband had given it to me two weeks before he died.
At the time, I’d thought it was simply an old key to a storage cabinet.
Margaret’s eyes widened when she saw it.
“You still have that?”
“Yes.”
She leaned closer.
“Then your husband was right.”
“About what?”
“That you would remember.”
She drove me back toward town.
But instead of taking me home, she stopped outside our business headquarters.
The doors were locked.
Margaret used her key.
We walked inside.
She led me straight to my husband’s private office.
Behind a painting on the wall was a small safe.
The key fit perfectly.
Inside was a stack of envelopes.
Each one had a name written across the front.
Mine.
My son’s.
My daughter’s.
And one simply marked:
OPEN LAST.
Margaret handed me mine.
I opened it.
My husband’s handwriting filled the page.
“My love, if you’re reading this, our children have already shown you who they really are.”
I couldn’t stop the tears.
He continued:
“I knew they would come after the house and the business. That’s why I protected you before I was gone.”
Then I reached the final paragraph.
My hands stopped shaking.
Because my husband had discovered something about our son months before his death.
Something so serious that he had secretly recorded their entire conversation.
Margaret looked at me.
“There’s one more thing.”
“What?”
She pointed toward the envelope marked OPEN LAST.
“Your husband said that envelope would determine whether your son keeps the inheritance.”
I stared at it.
Then I slowly opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
My son’s face.
Standing beside a bank employee.
And beneath the photograph was a handwritten date.
Three weeks before his father’s death.
My heart sank.
Because my son hadn’t simply been planning to take the house.
He had been preparing for his father’s death long before the funeral.
And according to the document beneath the photograph…
he had already tried to steal something worth millions.
