The Phone Call My Parents Never Expected

PART 2 — The Phone Call My Parents Never Expected

My phone started ringing before I had even crossed the state line.

I looked at the screen.

Mom.

I let it ring.

Then Dad called.

>

Then Mom again.

>

Then my brother.

I turned the phone face down and kept driving.

For eighteen years, they had been perfectly comfortable with my silence.

I figured they could survive one night without my voice.

By midnight, I reached a small hotel halfway to my new home. I checked in, carried my suitcase upstairs, and finally turned my phone back on.

There were seventeen missed calls.

And one voicemail.

I pressed play.

My mother’s voice came through, trembling.

“Please call me. I know you’re angry, but we need to talk.”

I almost deleted it.

Then she said something that made my hand freeze.

“Your brother just told us something.”

I sat down on the edge of the bed.

The message continued.

“He says he knows why you were never invited.”

My stomach tightened.

I listened again.

Then I called.

Mom answered before the first ring finished.

“Where are you?”

“I’m safe.”

She started crying.

“Why didn’t you tell us you were leaving?”

I laughed bitterly.

“When would you have listened?”

Silence.

Then Dad came onto the phone.

His voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not authoritative.

Scared.

“Your brother told us something tonight,” he said.

“What?”

“He said the reason you were left behind all those years wasn’t because you weren’t wanted.”

I stared at the hotel wall.

“Then why?”

Dad took a long breath.

“Because we were told you couldn’t travel.”

My heart began pounding.

“Who told you that?”

Another silence.

Then my mother whispered:

“Your aunt.”

I sat completely still.

That didn’t make sense.

Aunt Diane had always been the person who made me feel loved when everyone else seemed too busy.

Dad continued.

“She told us you became extremely anxious whenever you traveled. She said doctors advised against taking you on long trips.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“That never happened.”

“I know,” Dad whispered.

“Because we finally checked.”

I couldn’t speak.

Then he said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

“Your aunt had been lying to us for nine years.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Then Mom suddenly cried out.

“Wait.”

I heard papers moving in the background.

“What is it?” I asked.

She didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, her voice came back, barely above a whisper.

“Your aunt sent us something tonight.”

“What?”

“A letter.”

Dad picked up the phone.

“And there’s a photograph attached.”

My heart stopped.

“What photograph?”

His answer made the room feel suddenly smaller.

“It was taken nine years ago.”

“A picture of you.”

I swallowed.

“Doing what?”

Dad’s voice broke.

“Standing at an airport.”

I couldn’t move.

Because I had never been to an airport with Aunt Diane.

At least…

That’s what I remembered.

Then Mom said:

“There’s something written on the back.”

“What?”

She began crying again.

If they ever find out what happened that summer, they’ll understand why I had to keep her away.

I stared at the dark window.

For the first time, I wasn’t angry anymore.

I was afraid.

Because suddenly, those nine summers didn’t look like rejection.

They looked like someone had been hiding something.

And my parents had just discovered that the person they trusted to protect me…

might have been protecting me from them.

Then my phone buzzed.

A text appeared from an unknown number.

Only six words:

“Don’t go to your new home.”

And underneath it was a photograph of my car.

Taken less than ten minutes earlier.
