The Room Beneath the House

PART 2 — The Room Beneath the House

The first thing Detective Bennett noticed was the smell.

Cold earth.

Mold.

And something strangely familiar.

She raised her flashlight and slowly descended the narrow staircase beneath the shed.

>

Noah followed only as far as the police allowed him.

>

“Stay up there,” the detective ordered.

The stairs ended at a concrete hallway.

There were three doors.

The first was empty.

The second contained old boxes and broken furniture.

But the third door had a brand-new lock.

Bennett stared at it.

“Why would an old man replace this lock recently?”

An officer cut it open.

The door swung inward.

Everyone froze.

Inside was a small room with a bed, a table, several blankets, and a battery-powered lamp.

Someone had been living there.

Recently.

On the table sat a glass of water.

Still half full.

Beside it was a notebook.

Bennett opened it.

The first page contained one sentence:

“If they find this room, Lily already knows.”

Noah’s heart slammed against his ribs.

“Lily knows what?”

Nobody answered.

Bennett turned the page.

There were dates.

Hundreds of them.

Some went back fifteen years.

Then she found a name.

LILY.

Underneath it were several notes.

“Tuesday — she asked about Noah.”

“Friday — she refused to eat.”

“Sunday — she wants to leave.”

Noah covered his mouth.

“She was here.”

Detective Bennett nodded.

“But when?”

She turned another page.

The last entry had been written only three months earlier.

“She escaped.”

Margaret suddenly began sobbing.

Daniel stared at her.

“What does this mean?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

But Detective Bennett noticed something.

Margaret wasn’t looking at the notebook.

She was staring at one particular photograph on the wall.

Bennett walked toward it.

It was an old family photograph.

Harold stood in the center.

Daniel was beside him.

Margaret was holding seven-year-old Noah.

And behind them stood Lily.

Sixteen years old.

Smiling.

But someone had scratched a black X across Lily’s face.

Bennett carefully removed the photograph from the wall.

Something fell from behind it.

A key.

Attached to the key was a tiny metal tag.

“BLUE HOUSE.”

Noah immediately recognized the words.

“There’s an abandoned blue house near the old train tracks.”

Detective Bennett looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Lily and I used to play there.”

They drove there immediately.

The house had been abandoned for years.

The windows were broken.

The porch sagged.

The front door was hanging from one hinge.

Bennett entered first.

“Police!”

Nothing.

They searched every room.

Empty.

Then Noah noticed something carved into the wall.

Three tiny white flowers.

His knees nearly gave out.

“That’s Lily’s.”

Detective Bennett examined the carving.

Then she noticed fresh scratches around the floorboards.

She pried one loose.

Beneath it was another envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Lily.

Older now.

But unmistakably Lily.

Standing beside a little girl.

On the back were five words:

“Noah, don’t trust Dad.”

Noah’s face went pale.

He turned toward his father.

Daniel stood completely still.

Detective Bennett immediately stepped between them.

“Daniel, where were you the night Lily disappeared?”

Daniel looked at his wife.

Then at the photograph.

His eyes filled with tears.

“I lied.”

Margaret gasped.

Daniel lowered his head.

“Lily didn’t run away.”

Noah whispered:

“Then what happened?”

Daniel finally looked at his son.

“Your grandfather took her.”

The room went silent.

“He told me he’d sent her somewhere safe,” Daniel continued. “He said she was afraid of us. I believed him.”

Margaret began shaking.

“You knew?”

“I suspected the truth years later.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Because Harold threatened to hurt Lily if I went to the police.”

Detective Bennett stared at him.

“Where is she now?”

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“I don’t know.”

Then his phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman’s trembling voice came through the speaker.

“Dad?”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Noah grabbed his arm.

“Who is that?”

Daniel’s lips trembled.

Then the voice spoke again.

“Tell Noah I’m sorry I left him.”

Noah began crying.

Because after fifteen years…

He finally heard his sister’s voice.

And Lily had one more thing to tell them.

“Grandpa wasn’t the only person keeping me hidden.”
