The Man Beneath the Mask

PART 2 — The Man Beneath the Mask

For the first few weeks of their marriage, Clara convinced herself she could survive anything.

Don Baste was difficult.

He demanded things.

He rarely smiled.

And whenever Clara entered a room, his cold eyes followed her as if he were studying her every movement.

>

But something didn’t make sense.

>

He never touched her.

Never tried to force affection.

Never even asked her to share his bed.

Instead, every night, he locked himself inside a private room and refused to let anyone enter.

One evening, Clara heard a strange sound behind the door.

A heavy thud.

Then a groan.

She knocked.

“Don Baste? Are you alright?”

Silence.

She knocked again.

“Please answer me.”

Finally, his voice came from inside.

“Go away.”

Clara hesitated.

Then she heard something crash.

She opened the door.

Baste was sitting on the floor.

His wheelchair had been overturned beside him.

Clara rushed toward him.

“Don Baste!”

“Don’t touch me!”

But she ignored him.

She helped him back into the chair.

For the first time, she noticed something strange beneath his shirt.

A thin line ran around the back of his neck.

Almost like a seam.

Clara stared.

“What happened to your skin?”

Baste immediately covered it.

“Nothing.”

But Clara knew there was something he wasn’t telling her.

Months passed.

Despite everything, Clara slowly discovered that Baste wasn’t the cruel man everyone believed him to be.

He secretly paid school fees for poor children.

He sent groceries to struggling families.

He had even been paying the medical bills of one of Clara’s neighbors without telling anyone.

One night Clara finally confronted him.

“Why do you pretend to be someone you’re not?”

Baste stared at her.

“You wouldn’t understand.”

“Then let me try.”

He looked away.

“People only love what they can see.”

Clara didn’t understand what he meant.

Until their first wedding anniversary.

That night, the mansion was strangely quiet.

Baste called Clara into his private room.

“I need to show you something.”

Clara stepped inside.

He locked the door.

Her heart began pounding.

Baste reached behind his neck.

Then slowly pulled at something beneath his jaw.

Clara’s eyes widened.

The outer layer of his face began to move.

She stumbled backward.

“Don Baste…”

He continued.

And then—

he removed the entire prosthetic mask.

Clara covered her mouth.

The scars disappeared with it.

The heavy folds.

The distorted features.

Everything she had believed about his appearance was suddenly gone.

Standing before her was a completely different man.

Tall.

Fit.

Broad-shouldered.

With thick dark hair and striking eyes.

A face that looked nothing like the one the newspapers had mocked for years.

Clara couldn’t speak.

Baste looked down.

“My real name is Sebastian Montemayor.”

“I know…”

“No,” he said quietly.

“You know the name of the man I pretended to be.”

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Why would you do this?”

Sebastian took a deep breath.

“Because someone has been trying to kill me for years.”

He explained that the wheelchair, weight, scars, and even his mannerisms had all been part of an elaborate disguise.

He had created the identity of the “Pig Billionaire” to make his enemies underestimate him.

But there was one thing he hadn’t planned for.

Clara.

“I expected you to hate me,” he admitted.

“I expected you to leave the moment you discovered the truth.”

Clara stared at him.

“Then why did you marry me?”

Sebastian looked at her with an expression she had never seen before.

“Because your father offered you to me.”

He paused.

“And I couldn’t allow him to sell you to someone who might actually hurt you.”

Clara’s breathing stopped.

Then Sebastian placed a folder on the table.

“There’s something else you need to know.”

She opened it.

Inside were documents proving that her father’s gambling debt was not actually fifty million pesos.

The amount had been deliberately inflated.

And the person behind the scheme wasn’t her father.

It was someone much closer to Clara than she ever imagined.

Sebastian pointed to the final page.

Clara read the name.

Her hands began to tremble.

Because the person who had arranged her forced marriage…

was someone she had trusted her entire life.

And suddenly, the anniversary she thought was about discovering her husband’s face became the night she discovered who had destroyed her family in the first place.
