Story Part 2 — The Thing Inside Maya
Dr. Lawson pointed to the scan.
“That mass is pressing against several organs.”
My heart seemed to stop.
“A mass?”
He nodded.
“We don’t know exactly what it is yet. We need additional imaging and blood work before we can say more.”
Maya stared at him.
“Am I going to die?”
The doctor immediately pulled a chair closer.
“No. Don’t think that way. We have more information to gather first.”
But I could see the concern in his eyes.
And that frightened me more than his words.
I reached for Maya’s hand.
She squeezed my fingers so tightly that they hurt.
“Mom…”
“I’m here.”
“I knew something was wrong.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I told Dad.”
I closed my eyes.
Because she had.
She had told him.
Again and again.
And he had called it attention-seeking.
Dr. Lawson looked at me.
“I need to ask you something.”
His voice became quieter.
“Has Maya experienced any unusual symptoms recently? Anything besides the pain and nausea?”
I thought for a moment.
Then I remembered.
“There was something.”
“What?”
“She started waking up at night sweating. And she said sometimes she felt pressure in her chest.”
The doctor’s expression changed again.
“Why didn’t you mention that earlier?”
“I didn’t realize it mattered.”
He nodded slowly.
“Most parents wouldn’t.”
Then the door opened.
A nurse stepped inside holding another set of results.
She whispered something into Dr. Lawson’s ear.
He read the paper.
Then looked at me.
“We need to move her upstairs.”
“Why?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
“There’s something else we need to check.”
My stomach dropped.
“What something?”
He glanced toward Maya.
“I don’t want to alarm her before we have confirmation.”
Maya heard him anyway.
She began crying.
“Mom, what’s happening?”
I stood beside her.
“Nothing is happening without me being right here.”
Then my phone vibrated.
Robert.
Again.
I looked at the screen.
Where are you?
A second message appeared.
I told you not to take her there. Bring her home.
I stared at those words.
Then another message arrived.
You’re going to regret spending money on this.
Something inside me broke.
I turned the phone off.
Completely.
For the first time in our marriage…
I didn’t care what Robert wanted.
My daughter needed me.
Hours passed.
Maya was taken for another scan.
I sat alone in the hallway, staring at the vending machine across from me.
A woman in scrubs walked past.
Someone’s child cried behind a closed door.
A cart squeaked across the floor.
Everything felt painfully normal.
Except my world wasn’t normal anymore.
At 9:37 p.m., Dr. Lawson returned.
This time…
He wasn’t alone.
A specialist walked beside him carrying a folder.
I stood immediately.
“What did you find?”
The specialist looked at me carefully.
“Mrs. Thorne, your daughter has a large abdominal mass.”
I swallowed.
“Is it cancer?”
He paused.
“We don’t know yet.”
That answer somehow frightened me more.
“But there is something unusual about it.”
He opened the folder.
“We believe it has been growing for quite some time.”
I stared at him.
“How long?”
“Possibly months.”
Months.
I thought about every night Maya had complained.
Every morning she had looked pale.
Every time Robert had told her she was exaggerating.
And suddenly I couldn’t stop crying.
Then the specialist said something that made me freeze.
“We found something else on the imaging.”
“What?”
He turned the folder toward me.
“There appears to be a second structure.”
My mouth went dry.
“A second mass?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“It looks like something else entirely.”
I stared at the scan.
“What does that mean?”
He looked toward the hallway.
Then back at me.
“We need to speak privately.”
My heart began pounding.
“Doctor…”
He hesitated.
Then finally said:
“Your daughter’s condition may not be what we initially thought.”
I could barely speak.
“What are you saying?”
He leaned closer.
And whispered something that made the blood drain from my face.
Because whatever was inside Maya…
wasn’t simply a tumor.
And when the doctor finally told me what they believed it was…
I realized someone had been keeping a devastating secret from my daughter for years.
