The Message on the Sheet

Story Part 2 — The Message on the Sheet

On the white sheet…

There was a small folded piece of paper.

My hands began shaking.

I looked at my husband.

He was still asleep.

>

My mother-in-law was lying on the other side of the bed, completely motionless.

>

I slowly picked up the paper.

There was only one sentence written on it.

“You need to know what your husband has been hiding from you.”

My heart dropped.

I read it again.

Then again.

Who had written this?

And why had they left it on my bed?

I looked around the room.

Everything seemed normal.

Too normal.

Then I noticed something else.

My mother-in-law’s handbag was sitting on the chair beside the window.

It was slightly open.

And sticking out of it…

Was a photograph.

I reached toward it.

The moment I saw the picture, I felt the blood drain from my face.

It was my husband.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was a woman I had never seen before.

And written on the back of the photograph was a date.

Three months before our wedding.

My stomach tightened.

I carefully put the photograph back.

Then my husband suddenly moved.

I froze.

His eyes opened.

“What are you doing?”

I couldn’t answer.

He looked toward the sheet.

Then toward the photograph.

His entire expression changed.

“Where did you get that?”

His voice wasn’t angry.

It was frightened.

I took one step backward.

“Who is she?”

He sat up quickly.

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“Tell me who she is.”

Before he could answer, my mother-in-law suddenly opened her eyes.

She looked directly at me.

Then at the photograph.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally, she whispered:

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”

Those words made my entire body go cold.

I looked at my husband.

Then at his mother.

“What exactly wasn’t I supposed to find?”

My mother-in-law slowly sat up.

Her face had completely changed.

The drunken woman from the night before was gone.

She looked perfectly sober.

And completely terrified.

She reached for the photograph.

I pulled it away.

“No.”

I stepped back.

“You’re going to tell me the truth first.”

My husband stood.

“Please, just listen.”

But I was done listening to half-truths.

“You made me give up my bed on my wedding night.”

“You let your mother sleep beside you.”

“And now I find a photograph of you with another woman from before our wedding.”

My voice cracked.

“What have you both been hiding?”

My mother-in-law looked at her son.

Then she whispered something that made him close his eyes.

“Tell her.”

He didn’t move.

She repeated it.

“Tell your wife the truth.”

My husband finally looked at me.

And what he said next changed everything.

“That woman in the photograph…”

He swallowed hard.

“She’s the reason my mother insisted on coming to our wedding.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

He looked toward the bedroom door.

“Because she knows where that woman is now.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

He didn’t answer.

Then suddenly…

Someone knocked on the bedroom door.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

My husband turned pale.

My mother-in-law whispered:

“Oh no.”

The door opened.

And the person standing there was the last person I expected to see on my wedding morning.

The woman from the photograph.
