Story Part 2 — The Mail That Changed Everything
The moment I got back to the hotel, I spread the envelopes across the bed.
My hands were shaking.
I had expected utility bills.
Maybe grocery receipts.
Instead, I found something much worse.
One envelope contained a notice from the bank.
Another contained a medical statement addressed to my mother.
Then I found a letter from the homeowners’ association.
My eyes stopped on one sentence:
“Unauthorized occupancy and property-use violations have been reported.”
I read it twice.
Then I opened another envelope.
It was from a private care agency.
According to the invoice, someone had been charging my mother for housekeeping services.
Housekeeping.
I almost laughed.
My mother was the one cleaning the entire house.
For fourteen months.
I checked the dates.
Every single week.
Someone had been paying themselves from an account connected to the house.
Then I found the document that made my stomach turn.
A power-of-attorney form.
My mother’s signature appeared at the bottom.
But the signature looked wrong.
I knew my mother’s handwriting.
She had taught me to write my name when I was five.
That wasn’t her signature.
Someone had copied it.
I immediately called my attorney.
“I need you to check something.”
I photographed the document and sent it.
There was a long silence.
Then he said:
“Iris, don’t confront them yet.”
“Why?”
“Because this may be bigger than financial abuse.”
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?”
“The document gives someone authority over your mother’s financial accounts and property decisions.”
I stared at the page.
“Who?”
He read the name.
Then my blood ran cold.
“Melissa.”
My brother’s wife.
I sat down.
For six years, I had worked overseas.
Every month, I had sent money home.
Every bonus.
Every extra shift.
Every sacrifice.
And eventually, I bought my mother the house she had always dreamed of.
A place with a garden.
A quiet kitchen.
A room where she could finally rest.
But while I was thousands of miles away…
Melissa had apparently turned my mother’s dream home into her own kingdom.
The next morning, I returned to the house.
This time, I didn’t knock.
I used my key.
Melissa came rushing down the stairs.
“What are you doing?”
I looked at her calmly.
“Coming home.”
Derek appeared behind her.
He looked annoyed.
“You should have called.”
“I did.”
“To Mom?”
“No.”
“To my attorney.”
His face changed.
Melissa’s smile disappeared.
I placed a folder on the table.
“What is that?” Derek asked.
“Documents.”
I opened the folder.
“Bank statements.”
“Medical records.”
“Household invoices.”
“And the power-of-attorney document.”
Melissa went completely silent.
Derek picked it up.
Then looked at his wife.
“What is this?”
She immediately said,
“I was helping Mom manage things.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“You were managing her.”
My mother appeared in the doorway.
She looked frightened.
I walked toward her.
“Mom, you don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
She started crying.
Derek looked at me.
“You’re making a huge mistake.”
I turned toward him.
“No, Derek.”
“I made the mistake six years ago.”
“I trusted my family.”
Then I placed one final envelope on the table.
It was the original deed to the house.
My name was on it.
Not Derek’s.
Not Melissa’s.
Mine.
Derek stared at it.
“But you bought it for Mom.”
“Yes.”
“Then why is your name on the deed?”
“Because I wanted to make sure nobody could take it from her.”
Melissa suddenly stepped forward.
“You can’t just throw us out!”
I looked at her.
“Actually…”
“I can.”
Then the doorbell rang.
My attorney stood outside.
Beside him was a police officer.
Melissa’s face went white.
Derek whispered,
“What did you do?”
I looked at my mother.
Then back at them.
“I asked someone to investigate.”
The officer stepped inside.
“We need to speak with Melissa regarding the financial documents.”
My mother grabbed my hand.
For the first time since I had come home…
Her hands weren’t trembling.
Then my attorney quietly pulled me aside.
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
He handed me a photograph.
It showed Melissa entering a bank.
The date was fourteen months earlier.
The same week my mother had supposedly signed the power-of-attorney.
But there was something in the photograph that made my blood run cold.
Melissa wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was someone I recognized immediately.
Someone I never expected to be involved.
My own brother.
Derek.
And suddenly…
I realized this wasn’t just about a cruel sister-in-law.
My brother had known everything.
Maybe he had known from the beginning.
I looked at him.
“Derek…”
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
Then my mother whispered something behind me.
“Iris…”
I turned.
She was holding an old envelope.
“I found this hidden in Melissa’s room.”
My heart began pounding.
“What is it?”
Mom handed it to me.
Inside was a copy of a document dated six years earlier.
The day I left the country.
I read the first line.
And everything suddenly made sense.
Because before I ever left…
someone in my family had already planned what they were going to do with my mother’s house.
