Every bite is silky, buttery, and packed with warm homemade flavor.

Perfect as a side dish for family dinners, holiday meals, potlucks, or cozy weekend gatherings, Velvet Potato Bake pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, grilled meats, vegetables, or can even be served as a main dish with salad. • Resting Time: 10 minutes
  • Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes

Yield

Serves 6 to 8

Ingredients

For the Potato Bake

  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme or parsley
  • Butter for greasing dish

Optional Topping

  • Extra cheese
  • Chopped fresh parsley
  • Crispy breadcrumbs

Ingredient Notes

  • Yukon Gold potatoes give a naturally buttery texture.
  • Russet potatoes also work well and become very tender.
  • Heavy cream creates the richest velvet texture.
  • Fresh garlic adds deep flavor to the sauce.
  • Cheese is optional but adds extra richness and golden topping.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

Peel and slice the potatoes thinly, about ⅛ inch thick, for even cooking. Place slices in cold water while preparing the sauce, then drain and pat dry.

Step 2: Make the Cream Sauce

In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft. Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

Add cream, milk, salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Heat gently until warm but not boiling.

Step 3: Layer the Dish

Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish with butter.

Arrange one layer of potatoes in the dish. Spoon some cream sauce over the top. Sprinkle a little cheddar cheese. Repeat layers until all potatoes are used.

Pour remaining sauce evenly over everything and top with parmesan cheese.

Step 4: Bake Covered

Cover dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

Step 5: Bake Uncovered

Remove foil and bake another 20 to 25 minutes until top is golden and potatoes are fork tender.

Step 6: Rest Before Serving

Let the bake rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This helps the sauce thicken beautifully.
