The Plane Hadn’t Even Landed When Adrian Learned His Entire Escape Plan Was Already Falling Apart

PART 2: The Plane Hadn’t Even Landed When Adrian Learned His Entire Escape Plan Was Already Falling Apart

For the next several minutes, nobody spoke.

Adrian stared straight ahead.

Vanessa kept looking between us.

Then Adrian’s phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

>

Whatever he saw made the color drain from his face.

>

“What happened?” Vanessa whispered.

He ignored her.

His fingers moved quickly across the screen.

Then he looked at me.

“You did this?”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Did what?”

“The account.”

I smiled faintly.

“Which account?”

His jaw tightened.

“You know exactly which one.”

I turned toward the window.

“Then you already know the answer.”

Vanessa suddenly reached for his arm.

“Adrian, what is she talking about?”

He pulled away.

“Nothing.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“Don’t lie to me too.”

That sentence changed the atmosphere completely.

Adrian looked at her.

“You need to calm down.”

“Calm down?”

Her voice cracked.

“You told me everything was settled.”

“It was supposed to be.”

“What does that mean?”

I watched her face.

She was finally realizing that she hadn’t been running away with a man who had simply fallen out of love with his wife.

She had been part of a much larger plan.

And she might have been the last person Adrian intended to protect.

The captain announced that we were beginning our descent.

Adrian leaned toward me.

“Claire, we can fix this.”

I looked at him.

“You had eleven months to fix it.”

“I was going to give you the house.”

I almost laughed.

“You were going to give me the house while stealing $1.4 million?”

“I wasn’t stealing.”

“What would you call it?”

He didn’t answer.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from my attorney appeared.

The court order has been processed. The accounts are frozen pending investigation.

I showed Adrian the screen.

He stared at it.

Then he whispered:

“You’ve destroyed me.”

I shook my head.

“No, Adrian.”

“You did that yourself.”

The plane landed.

As the doors opened, passengers began gathering their belongings.

Adrian remained seated.

Then two investigators entered the cabin.

They approached our row.

“Mr. Cole?”

Adrian looked up.

“Yes?”

“We need to speak with you.”

Vanessa immediately stood.

“What is this about?”

One investigator looked at her.

“We’ll need to speak with you as well.”

Her face went pale.

Adrian looked at me one final time.

“You planned this.”

“No.”

I stood and picked up my bag.

“I documented it.”

As I walked down the aisle, I heard Vanessa whisper:

“You told me your wife knew nothing.”

Adrian said nothing.

Then she asked the question that made him completely silent.

“How much of our money was actually hers?”

I didn’t stay to hear his answer.

Outside the terminal, my attorney was waiting.

He handed me a folder.

“You were right to suspect the trip wasn’t just about the money.”

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Adrian and Vanessa weren’t the only people involved.

There was another man standing beside them.

A man I recognized immediately.

He had been Adrian’s business partner for years.

And according to the documents inside the folder, he had been helping Adrian move the money.

But that wasn’t the biggest shock.

My attorney pointed to one final page.

“Claire, this changes everything.”

I looked down.

It was a transfer agreement dated six weeks earlier.

The same week I first discovered Vanessa.

And beside the signature was Adrian’s name.

He hadn’t simply planned to leave me.

He had planned to make sure I would receive almost nothing after he disappeared.

But there was one problem.

The agreement had a second signature.

And that signature belonged to someone Adrian trusted completely.

Someone who had secretly been helping me all along.
