PART 2: Marcus Opened the Folder—Then Realized I Had Known the Truth for Eight Months
Marcus called again.
I still didn’t answer.
A few seconds later, another message appeared.
“Claire, please call me. This isn’t what you think.”
I almost laughed.
Eight months ago, I had heard those exact words in my head while sitting alone in his office.
Back then, I had been afraid.
Now, I wasn’t.
I finished packing a small suitcase and walked downstairs.
Marcus was standing in the hallway when I came out.
His face was pale.
“What did you put in that folder?”
I looked at him.
“You know exactly what’s inside.”
“No, I don’t.”
“Yes, you do.”
He stepped closer.
“Claire, listen to me.”
I raised my hand.
“No. You listen.”
For the first time in our marriage, Marcus didn’t interrupt me.
I told him I had found the folder eight months earlier.
I told him I had copied every document.
And I told him I had already given copies to my attorney.
His expression changed.
“You went to a lawyer?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Seven months ago.”
He stared at me.
“Then why didn’t you say anything?”
I looked at him for several seconds.
“Because I loved you.”
That answer seemed to hurt him more than anything else.
I continued.
“I thought you had made mistakes. I thought you were trying to fix them. I thought protecting you gave our marriage a chance.”
He lowered his eyes.
“You don’t understand what happened.”
“Then explain it.”
Silence.
I waited.
Finally, Marcus admitted that his company had been struggling for nearly two years.
Instead of telling me, he had borrowed money.
Then more money.
Eventually, he had started moving money through accounts connected to our household finances.
But that wasn’t the worst part.
He had used my name on several documents because he believed the lenders would approve larger amounts if they thought we were both responsible.
My hands went cold.
“You put my name on debt?”
He nodded.
“I was going to fix everything before you found out.”
“You weren’t fixing anything.”
I held up my phone.
“You were hiding it.”
Marcus looked toward the folder.
Then he whispered:
“How much does your lawyer know?”
“Everything.”
His face drained of color.
Then Tessa appeared at the doorway.
She had clearly heard enough to realize something serious was happening.
“Dad?”
Marcus turned toward her.
“What?”
She looked at me.
Then at him.
“Is she leaving?”
I didn’t answer.
Tessa suddenly began crying.
“Dad, I didn’t mean for this to happen.”
Marcus froze.
I looked at her.
“What exactly didn’t you mean?”
She couldn’t speak.
Marcus stared at his daughter.
“Tessa?”
She wiped her face.
“I only wanted you to stop choosing her.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Tessa finally confessed.
The accusation at the cookout had been a lie.
She had deliberately stepped backward into me.
She wanted Marcus to become angry enough to finally take her side.
But then she said something that shocked even me.
She had found the financial folder months earlier.
She knew about the debts.
And she had been using that knowledge to manipulate her father.
“If you leave her,” she whispered, “you won’t have to tell her about the money.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because of Tessa.
Because suddenly, I understood why Marcus had defended her without asking a single question.
He wasn’t simply protecting his daughter.
He was afraid of losing the one person who knew everything.
Me.
I picked up my suitcase.
Marcus stepped toward me.
“Claire, please.”
I shook my head.
“You chose your daughter today.”
He looked devastated.
“And I understand that.”
I paused at the door.
“But you also chose to make me responsible for your secrets.”
Then I placed my wedding ring beside the necklace I had left behind earlier.
“I won’t carry them anymore.”
I walked outside.
Marcus didn’t follow.
But as I reached my car, my phone buzzed.
It was my attorney.
“Claire, I just received another document from the bank. You need to see this immediately.”
There was an attachment.
I opened it.
My heart stopped.
The document wasn’t about Marcus’s business.
It was about our house.
And according to the date on the paperwork, Marcus had already transferred ownership of it eight months ago.
To someone else.
Someone whose name I recognized immediately.
I looked back at the house.
And suddenly, I realized Marcus hadn’t been hiding one secret from me.
He had been hiding an entire plan.
