PART 2: The Officers Told Me Why Ethan Sold His Guitar—And I Realized He Had Hidden Something Much Bigger From Me
I held Ethan’s hand as we stepped onto the porch.
My heart was pounding.
The older officer looked at Ethan.
“Son, can you tell your mother what you did yesterday?”
Ethan looked down.
“I already told her.”
“About the guitar,” the officer said.
Ethan nodded.
The officer looked at me.
“That isn’t the whole story.”
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
The second officer opened a folder.
“Yesterday afternoon, Ethan didn’t simply sell his guitar.”
“He contacted a local music shop and asked them to buy it immediately.”
I looked at my son.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because you would’ve tried to stop me.”
I didn’t know what to say.
The officer continued.
“Ethan received several hundred dollars for the guitar.”
“He could have kept the money.”
“Instead, he used every dollar to help Sophie.”
I looked at Ethan.
“What else did you do?”
He swallowed.
“I found a wheelchair online.”
“It wasn’t new, but it was in good condition.”
“I bought it.”
The officer nodded.
“And then Ethan did something else.”
He pulled another photograph from the folder.
It showed Ethan standing beside a wheelchair outside a repair shop.
“He discovered Sophie’s old wheelchair wasn’t simply worn out.”
“It had a damaged brake and a cracked frame.”
“It could have caused a serious accident.”
My hand went to my mouth.
“Does Sophie know?”
The officer smiled.
“She does now.”
Then he explained why they had come to our house.
Someone at the school had reported that a thirteen-year-old boy had purchased a wheelchair with money from selling a valuable instrument.
The police initially thought something suspicious might have happened.
But after checking everything, they discovered the truth.
Ethan hadn’t stolen anything.
He hadn’t been pressured.
He hadn’t been tricked.
He had simply sacrificed something he loved to help someone who needed it.
Then the officer said something I will never forget.
“Ma’am, we’re not here because your son is in trouble.”
“We’re here because the department wanted you to know what kind of young man you’re raising.”
I burst into tears.
Ethan looked embarrassed.
“Mom, please don’t cry.”
I hugged him.
“I’m not upset.”
“I’m proud of you.”
Then the second officer handed Ethan a small envelope.
“This is from the officers.”
Ethan opened it.
Inside was a gift card to the music store.
His eyes widened.
“We can’t accept this.”
The officer smiled.
“You can.”
“But there’s one condition.”
Ethan looked at him.
“You have to use it to buy another guitar.”
Everyone laughed.
Then we heard someone approaching the driveway.
It was Sophie’s father.
He was pushing the new wheelchair.
Sophie was sitting in it.
Her face lit up when she saw Ethan.
“I wanted to thank you.”
Ethan shook his head.
“You don’t have to.”
Sophie smiled.
“You sold your guitar for me.”
Ethan shrugged.
“It was just a guitar.”
Her father stepped forward.
“No, son.”
“It wasn’t just a guitar.”
“It was something you loved.”
“And you gave it up because my daughter needed help.”
He handed Ethan a small envelope.
Ethan tried to refuse.
But Sophie’s father shook his head.
“It’s not money.”
“Open it.”
Inside was a photograph of Sophie sitting in her new wheelchair.
On the back, she had written:
“You gave me the freedom to keep moving.”
Ethan stared at it.
Then he hugged her.
That moment changed something in me.
I had always thought my job as his mother was to teach him how to succeed.
But that morning, I realized something more important.
I needed to teach him never to lose the kindness that made success meaningful.
Later that evening, I asked Ethan if he regretted selling his guitar.
He smiled.
“Not even a little.”
Then he looked at the empty guitar stand.
“But maybe someday I’ll get another one.”
I smiled.
“You will.”
What I didn’t tell him was that I had already called the music store.
And the next morning, there was going to be another knock at our door.
This time, someone was bringing Ethan a guitar.
But it wasn’t the guitar I expected.
