Part 2 — The Woman Who Walked to Their Table Knew More Than Either of Us
The woman in the charcoal suit stopped beside Andrew’s table.
“Mr. Bennett?”
Andrew looked up, annoyed.
“Yes?”
She placed the leather portfolio on the table.
“My name is Rebecca Cole. I’m conducting an internal investigation for your company.”
The smile disappeared from his face.
Vanessa suddenly stopped laughing.
Andrew glanced around the restaurant.
“This really isn’t the place for this.”
Rebecca remained calm.
“Actually, Mr. Bennett, tonight is exactly the place.”
I could barely breathe.
Daniel leaned closer to me.
“Watch his hands.”
I looked at Andrew.
His fingers were trembling.
Rebecca opened the portfolio and removed several documents.
“We have evidence that company funds were transferred into an account controlled by you.”
Andrew immediately shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Rebecca slid a printed statement across the table.
“It happened twelve times.”
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“I didn’t know anything about this.”
Andrew looked at her.
“Vanessa, sit down.”
She took a step backward.
“No.”
The entire restaurant seemed to be watching now.
Rebecca continued.
“We also discovered payments made for hotel rooms, private dinners, and a condominium.”
Andrew’s face turned pale.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You told me that apartment was yours.”
Andrew didn’t answer.
Then Rebecca said something that made my heart stop.
“There is one more problem.”
She pulled out another folder.
“This investigation didn’t begin because of the affair.”
Andrew stared at her.
“It began because someone inside the company reported that money was being diverted to cover personal debts.”
Daniel whispered, “That’s what I was trying to tell you.”
I turned toward him.
“What does this have to do with me?”
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Everything.”
He showed me a message on his phone.
It was from Andrew.
The date was six weeks earlier.
The message said:
“Once the divorce is finalized, she’ll have no claim on the business.”
My stomach dropped.
“He planned to divorce me?”
Daniel nodded.
“Not just divorce you.”
Rebecca stepped closer.
“He was preparing to make you responsible for the missing money.”
I felt the room spin.
Andrew looked at me.
“Don’t listen to them.”
I stared at him.
“You were going to blame me?”
He said nothing.
That silence was my answer.
Then Daniel reached into his jacket and handed Rebecca a small flash drive.
“This contains the recordings.”
Andrew suddenly stood.
“Where did you get that?”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“From your office.”
Andrew’s face went completely white.
Rebecca took the drive.
“Thank you.”
Then she turned toward me.
“Mrs. Bennett, there’s something you need to know before you make any decisions tonight.”
I swallowed.
“What?”
She lowered her voice.
“Your husband didn’t choose this restaurant for your anniversary.”
I looked at Andrew.
Rebecca continued:
“He chose it because he believed you would never come here.”
Then she placed one final photograph in front of me.
It showed Andrew entering a building two days earlier.
But the woman standing beside him wasn’t Vanessa.
It was someone I knew.
Someone who had been helping Andrew for months.
And when I saw her face, I realized the betrayal was much closer to home than I ever imagined.
