PART 2 — I FINALLY FOUND OUT WHAT THOSE STRANGE OBJECTS ALONG OREGON DRIVEWAYS ARE
For years, I kept noticing them while driving through rural Oregon.
They looked almost like strange little markers sitting near the ends of driveways.
Some were wooden.
Some appeared to be metal or plastic.
And because they were positioned so close to the road, I always assumed they had something to do with utilities, property boundaries, or maybe even snow removal.
But then I finally asked a local homeowner.
His answer surprised me.
“They’re usually there for the mail carrier.”
I looked again.
Suddenly, it made sense.
In rural areas, mailboxes and driveway entrances can be exposed to heavy snow, mud, gravel, and roadside debris.
Some homeowners use sturdy posts, protective structures, or highly visible markers around their driveway and mailbox area so drivers and delivery workers can easily see where the property entrance begins.
But there was another reason some of these markers looked unusual.
In areas with harsh winter weather, homeowners sometimes use tall poles or reflective markers to help identify the driveway when snow covers the ground.
Imagine several inches—or even feet—of snow covering the edge of your driveway.
Without a marker, a snowplow, delivery driver, or even the homeowner could have trouble seeing exactly where the driveway begins.
That little marker suddenly becomes extremely useful.
I also learned that not every strange roadside object has the same purpose.
Some can indicate underground utilities.
Others may mark property features, culverts, irrigation systems, or driveway boundaries.
So the next time you’re traveling through Oregon and see one of these mysterious objects, don’t assume it’s some forgotten piece of equipment.
It may simply be a practical marker placed there by a homeowner.
And here’s the part that made me laugh.
After learning what they were, I started noticing them everywhere.
Something I’d driven past dozens of times without thinking suddenly became impossible to ignore.
Sometimes the things we find most mysterious are actually the simplest things hiding in plain sight.
