My Parents Said “That Money Was Ours”… Then I Opened the University Account They Thought I’d Never Check

PART 2 — My Parents Said “That Money Was Ours”… Then I Opened the University Account They Thought I’d Never Check

The officer had barely finished taking photographs of my shattered windshield when my phone buzzed again.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the notification.

University Billing Office — Payment Confirmation

My stomach dropped.

>

I opened it.

>

There was a payment made three days earlier.

$6,400.

Paid toward my sister’s tuition.

From an account I had never authorized anyone to use.

I looked at my mother.

She immediately knew.

Her face changed before I even said a word.

“Mom,” I whispered. “What did you do?”

She looked away.

My father, standing outside with the officers, suddenly shouted through the open doorway.

“Don’t you dare blame your mother!”

I stared at him.

The officer beside him turned around.

“Sir, please stop yelling.”

But Dad couldn’t.

“You have no idea what family means!” he shouted. “We raised you! Everything you have came from us!”

Something inside me finally broke.

“No,” I said quietly.

Everyone went silent.

“Everything I have came from years of working for it.”

Dad stared at me as though I had slapped him.

Then my sister began crying.

“I didn’t know,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“You didn’t know about the Greece trip?”

She shook her head.

“I knew Mom and Dad were going somewhere. I didn’t know they were using your money.”

I believed her.

But then she added something that made the room completely silent.

“They told me you had already agreed.”

My mother covered her face.

That was when I understood.

This wasn’t a misunderstanding.

They had built an entire story around my money.

They had told my sister I was paying her tuition.

They had told relatives they were taking a family vacation.

And apparently, they had even told people that my emergency fund was really a family account.

The officer asked me to step aside.

“Do you have documentation showing the account belongs exclusively to you?”

“Yes.”

I opened the banking records.

Every deposit.

Every transfer.

Every statement.

My name was the only name attached to the account.

The officer looked through everything and nodded.

Then he asked my father why he believed the money belonged to him.

Dad didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

For the first time in my entire life, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not regret.

Not shame.

Fear.

Because he finally realized I wasn’t the child who would quietly forgive him just because he was my father.

The second officer came back inside after speaking with the bank.

“There are several additional transactions,” he said.

My heart sank.

“How many?”

He looked at the papers.

“Seven.”

Seven.

I felt dizzy.

There were grocery purchases.

A hotel.

A jewelry store.

Two restaurant charges.

And one payment to a private travel agency.

My mother suddenly whispered,

“That one wasn’t for us.”

I turned toward her.

“Then who was it for?”

She didn’t answer.

My sister did.

“It was for Dad.”

Dad’s face went completely white.

The officer asked him what the payment was for.

He remained silent.

Then my mother finally broke down.

“He was planning to leave.”

I stared at her.

“Leave where?”

She wiped her tears.

“With another woman.”

The room went completely still.

My father looked at her with pure fury.

“Stop talking.”

But Mom had already started.

“He told me he was going to take the Greece trip with her. He said once everything was settled, he was going to disappear.”

I couldn’t speak.

The money wasn’t just stolen for a vacation.

My father had been using my emergency fund to finance a completely separate life.

And my mother had known.

For months.

I looked at both of them and realized something painful.

They hadn’t simply taken my money.

They had taken my trust, my privacy, and every excuse I had ever made for their behavior.

The officer handed me his card.

“Keep every statement and receipt. Don’t delete anything.”

I nodded.

Then he looked toward my father.

“Sir, you’re going to need to come with us regarding the property damage. The financial allegations will be handled separately.”

Dad lowered his head.

As they walked him toward the police car, he suddenly turned around.

“Please,” he said.

Just one word.

Please.

For the first time, I didn’t feel guilty.

I simply closed the door.

That evening, I sat alone at my kitchen table, staring at the canceled Greece reservations.

Then another email arrived.

It was from the travel agency.

Subject: Cancellation Refund — $9,860

I stared at the number.

The money was coming back.

But I knew something else was gone forever.

My belief that family automatically meant loyalty.

And just as I closed my laptop, my phone rang.

It was the bank investigator.

His first sentence made my blood run cold.

“There’s one transaction we haven’t been able to explain yet.”

He paused.

“It was made almost two years ago.”

And when he told me whose name was attached to it, I realized my parents’ betrayal had started long before that shattered windshield.
