PART 2 — Brandon Thought the Baby Was His Biggest Shock… Until I Handed Him the Folder
Brandon stood frozen beside my hospital bed.
His bride, Vanessa, hadn’t moved.
She was still wearing the wedding dress she’d apparently abandoned in the middle of her own ceremony.
The room felt impossibly small.
Brandon looked from my newborn daughter to me.
“Claire… tell me the truth.”
I adjusted the blanket around the baby.
“You already know the truth.”
“No.” His voice cracked. “I don’t.”
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Brandon, we need to leave.”
I looked at her.
“Actually, you should stay.”
Her face went pale.
Because she knew what was inside the folder.
Brandon noticed.
“What folder?”
I reached beside my bed and picked it up.
“You remember telling me six months ago that you were finally marrying the woman who could give you the future you wanted?”
He nodded slowly.
“You made it very clear that our marriage had failed because I couldn’t give you children.”
Vanessa looked away.
I opened the folder.
“But while you were planning this wedding, I was investigating something else.”
I placed the first document on the bed.
A financial statement.
Then another.
Then another.
Brandon stared at them.
“What is this?”
“Payments made by Vanessa over the last two years.”
His expression changed.
I continued.
“Remember the consulting company you thought was helping your business?”
He nodded.
“It wasn’t a consulting company.”
Brandon looked at Vanessa.
“What is she talking about?”
Vanessa said nothing.
I slid another document across the bed.
“The company was created three months before Vanessa started working for you.”
Brandon picked it up.
His hands began shaking.
“And every month, money was transferred from your company into that account.”
He looked at me.
“How much?”
“Enough to explain why your company suddenly had cash-flow problems.”
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Claire, stop.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
Then I handed Brandon the final document.
It was a copy of a legal agreement.
His face went completely blank.
“What is this?”
“The agreement you signed.”
“I never signed this.”
“You did.”
He looked closer.
Then his eyes widened.
“That’s not my signature.”
“I know.”
Silence.
Vanessa suddenly stepped backward.
Brandon turned toward her.
“You forged my signature?”
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
She started crying.
“I needed time.”
“For what?”
She didn’t answer.
I did.
“To transfer ownership of part of his company.”
Brandon looked like someone had knocked the air out of him.
“You were stealing from me?”
Vanessa shook her head desperately.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
Brandon turned toward me.
“How did you find all this?”
I smiled faintly.
“Because after our divorce, I stopped trusting explanations.”
He looked down at my daughter.
Then back at me.
“And the baby?”
I took a breath.
“That part has nothing to do with Vanessa.”
His eyes filled with confusion.
“Then whose baby is she?”
I looked at him for several seconds.
“Yours.”
Brandon stopped breathing.
Vanessa’s face turned white.
“What?”
I nodded.
“She is your daughter.”
Brandon stared at the baby.
“But that’s impossible.”
“No.”
I reached for another envelope.
“It isn’t.”
I handed him the hospital paperwork.
“Remember the night you asked for a divorce?”
He nodded slowly.
“You told me you wanted a woman who could give you children.”
I swallowed.
“I was already pregnant.”
His eyes widened.
“You knew?”
“I found out two days before you left.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you had already made your decision.”
Brandon covered his mouth.
For the first time, I saw genuine regret on his face.
But then his expression changed.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?”
Vanessa said nothing.
I watched the realization spread across his face.
“She knew about the baby,” I said quietly.
Brandon turned toward her.
“How?”
I opened the last page of the folder.
And that was when the color disappeared from his face.
Because Vanessa hadn’t simply known about my pregnancy.
She had known exactly who the baby’s father was.
And according to the message printed on that page…
she had been trying to make sure Brandon never found out.
The wedding wasn’t the beginning of Vanessa’s betrayal.
It was the final step in a plan that had started long before Brandon ever asked her to marry him.
And now that their wedding guests were waiting outside…
Brandon had to decide whether he was going to walk back into that ballroom as Vanessa’s husband—
or leave it as the father of the daughter he’d abandoned before he even knew she existed.
