Bread and Butter Pudding

Bread and butter pudding is a traditional British dessert made from buttered bread, dried fruit, and a rich vanilla custard, baked until golden and slightly crisp on top.

📝 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 6–8 slices white bread (slightly stale works best)

  • Butter (softened)

  • ½ cup (75g) raisins or sultanas

  • 2 cups (500ml) whole milk

  • ½ cup (120ml) heavy cream (optional but richer)

  • 3 eggs

  • ¼–⅓ cup (50–70g) sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon (optional)

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Butter the bread, cut into triangles.

  3. Layer in a greased baking dish, sprinkling raisins between layers.

  4. Make custard: Whisk milk, cream, eggs, sugar, and vanilla.

  5. Pour over bread and press gently so bread absorbs custard.

  6. Let soak 10–15 minutes.

  7. Sprinkle nutmeg on top.

  8. Bake 30–40 minutes until golden and set.
