PART 2 ā I THOUGHT I HAD WALKED IN ON SOMETHING TERRIBLE⦠UNTIL MY FATHER REMOVED THE SHEET
My father looked at me with tears in his eyes.
āI can explain.ā
I kept Emily behind me.
āThen explain it now.ā
He slowly reached for the sheet covering the large object.
Emily whispered:
āMom, please don’t be mad.ā
My heart was pounding.
Dad pulled the sheet away.
I froze.
It wasn’t what I had feared.
It was a wooden mannequin.
A beautifully carved one.
Its shape was based on a child-sized figure, but it was unfinished. One side was covered in pencil markings, and dozens of small pieces of fabric were scattered across the table.
I stared at my father.
āWhat is this?ā
He sighed.
āYour mother started it.ā
My breath caught.
āMy mom?ā
He nodded.
āBefore she died, she wanted to make something special for Emily.ā
Emily stepped forward.
āGrandpa said Grandma wanted me to have it.ā
I looked at the mannequin again.
My father explained that my mother had been designing a traditional dress for Emily as a keepsake.
But she had passed away before she could finish it.
After her funeral, my father couldn’t bring himself to touch the project.
Until Emily found the old drawings.
āShe asked me to finish it,ā he said.
I looked at my daughter.
āYou knew about this?ā
She nodded.
āWe were making Grandma’s dress.ā
My eyes filled with tears.
Dad pointed toward the mannequin.
āI was teaching her how clothes are fitted. That’s why I told her to stand straight.ā
Then he looked ashamed.
āBut I used the wrong words when I told her she had good proportions.ā
I stared at him.
He lowered his head.
āI understand why you were frightened.ā
I felt my anger begin to soften.
But I still had questions.
āWhy was the upstairs door locked?ā
Dad looked toward the unfinished project.
āBecause the room contains sewing needles, saws, paint, and tools. I didn’t want Emily wandering around alone.ā
āAnd why did you tell her not to tell me?ā
He sighed.
āBecause it was supposed to be a surprise.ā
Emily suddenly spoke.
āGrandpa said Mom might cry if she saw it before it was finished.ā
I looked at my father.
He smiled sadly.
āHe was right.ā
I walked toward the mannequin.
Pinned to the front was a tiny piece of fabric.
I recognized it immediately.
It was from one of my mother’s old dresses.
My knees almost gave way.
āShe used this?ā
Dad nodded.
āShe wanted a piece of herself in it.ā
Emily wrapped her arms around my waist.
āGrandpa said Grandma would be happy.ā
I hugged her tightly.
āI think she would.ā
My father sat down on the edge of the bed.
For the first time, I noticed how old he looked.
Seventy-two.
Living alone.
Still trying to keep my mother’s memory alive.
And somehow, my daughter had become the bridge between them.
I apologized for accusing him.
He shook his head.
āDon’t apologize. You did exactly what a mother should do.ā
Then he looked at Emily.
āBut I also learned something.ā
āWhat?ā
āChildren shouldn’t be asked to keep secrets from their parents, even when the secret is harmless.ā
I nodded.
That night, we took the unfinished mannequin downstairs.
Emily carried the fabric.
Dad carried the wooden frame.
And I carried the old photograph of my mother.
Three generations of our family stood around the kitchen table.
And for the first time since my mother’s death, the house didn’t feel empty.
It felt alive.
But there was one thing I still couldn’t explain.
Before we left that evening, Emily pulled me aside.
āMom?ā
āWhat?ā
She whispered:
āThere’s another thing Grandpa showed me upstairs.ā
My heart skipped.
āWhat?ā
She pointed toward the locked room.
āGrandma left something else.ā
I looked at my father.
His face suddenly changed.
He knew exactly what Emily was talking about.
And whatever was inside that old roomā¦
he had never told me it existed.
