I WALKED INTO MY PARENTS’ HOUSE WITH $8 MILLION IN MY ACCOUNT… AND DISCOVERED THE INHERITANCE WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING

PART 2 — I WALKED INTO MY PARENTS’ HOUSE WITH $8 MILLION IN MY ACCOUNT… AND DISCOVERED THE INHERITANCE WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING

I stayed outside in the rain for almost a minute.

My parents had no idea I was standing there.

And I couldn’t bring myself to open that door.

Not yet.

>

I needed to understand what I had just heard.

>

My father spoke again.

“She can’t know about the documents.”

My mother’s voice trembled.

“What if she finds them?”

“Then we deal with it.”

My heart began pounding.

Documents?

What documents?

The $470,000 inheritance suddenly seemed insignificant.

I quietly stepped away from the door and walked around the side of the house.

There was an old window near my father’s office that never locked properly.

I pushed it open and climbed inside.

The house was dark.

I stood completely still.

My parents were still talking in the kitchen.

I moved toward my father’s office.

The door was slightly open.

Inside, everything looked exactly as I remembered.

His old desk.

The filing cabinet.

The framed photographs.

But something on the desk immediately caught my attention.

A thick manila envelope.

My name was written across it.

**EILEEN CARTER.**

My hands went cold.

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of my grandmother’s will.

I started reading.

Then I saw something that made me sit down.

The inheritance wasn’t $470,000.

It was much larger.

Much larger.

The $470,000 was only the amount my parents had told me about.

According to the document, my grandmother had left me controlling ownership of a property portfolio worth nearly $2.8 million.

There were rental properties.

A commercial building.

And an investment account.

But the strangest part wasn’t the money.

It was the date.

The will had been signed six years earlier.

Six years.

My parents had known about it the entire time.

I turned the page.

There was another document.

A transfer agreement.

My father had apparently attempted to move several of the properties into a private family company.

And my signature appeared at the bottom.

I stared at it.

I had never signed that document.

Someone had forged my signature.

Suddenly, I heard footsteps.

I quickly returned everything to the envelope and slid it exactly where I’d found it.

The office door opened.

My father stood there.

He looked directly at me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then his face changed.

“Eileen?”

I couldn’t move.

He looked toward the window.

Then toward the envelope.

“You weren’t supposed to see that.”

Those words confirmed everything.

I stepped toward him.

“How long?”

He said nothing.

“How long have you known about Grandma’s money?”

My mother appeared behind him.

She looked terrified.

“Eileen, please.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Please what?”

“Listen to us.”

“I’ve been listening.”

My father lowered his voice.

“We were trying to protect the family.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You were trying to protect yourselves.”

Then my phone buzzed.

My business attorney was calling.

I answered on speaker.

“Eileen, I just received confirmation from the bank.”

My father stared at me.

The attorney continued.

“The $8 million has cleared.”

Silence.

My mother looked at me.

“What $8 million?”

I didn’t answer.

My father stepped closer.

“What did he mean?”

I finally looked at both of them.

“I sold my company.”

My mother’s face went pale.

“For how much?”

“Thirty-one and a half million dollars.”

Nobody moved.

My father slowly sat down.

I watched the people who had been preparing to erase me from a $470,000 inheritance realize that I had just received $8 million in one payment.

But I wasn’t finished.

I placed the forged document on the desk.

“There’s one more problem.”

My father’s eyes moved toward it.

“I want to know who forged my signature.”

He looked at my mother.

My mother looked at him.

And in that moment, I knew.

One of them was about to confess.

But before either could speak, someone knocked loudly on the front door.

A man stood outside in a soaked black coat.

When my father saw him through the window, all the color disappeared from his face.

I had never seen that man before.

But my father clearly had.

He whispered:

“Oh God…”

I turned toward him.

“Who is that?”

My father didn’t answer.

The man knocked again.

Then he shouted through the rain:

“Mr. Carter, you have ten minutes to tell your daughter the truth…”

“And if you don’t…”

“I will.”
