PART 2: My Mother-in-Law Opened a Door I Had Never Seen Before—And Emily’s Secret Finally Made Sense
Linda stepped aside and motioned for me to come inside.
I was still furious.
“Tell me what happened.”
She closed the door behind me.
“First, you need to understand something. Emily didn’t cut her hair because she suddenly wanted a new hairstyle.”
“Then why?”
Linda looked toward the hallway.
“Because she believed it was the only way to protect someone.”
My anger disappeared.
“Protect who?”
Linda didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she walked into the kitchen and pulled a small envelope from a drawer.
“This was given to me today.”
She handed it to me.
My name was written across the front in Emily’s handwriting.
My hands began trembling.
I opened it.
Inside was a short note.
Mom, I’m sorry. Please don’t be angry with Grandma.
I could barely breathe.
The next line made my heart stop.
I had to do it because someone told me they would hurt you if I didn’t.
I looked at Linda.
“Who?”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know yet.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
Linda’s eyes filled with tears.
“Emily came to me this afternoon and asked if I knew someone who could cut her hair.”
“She wouldn’t tell me why.”
“She only kept saying that somebody was watching your house.”
My stomach tightened.
“Watching my house?”
Linda nodded.
“She said she had received messages.”
I grabbed my phone.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because she was afraid.”
Linda pulled out another piece of paper.
It was a printed text message.
If you want your mother to stay safe, do exactly what you’re told.
Below it was another message.
Cut your hair short. Leave the rest to us.
I felt dizzy.
“This isn’t about her hair.”
“No,” Linda whispered.
“It isn’t.”
She explained that Emily had noticed the same dark vehicle parked near our house several times during the previous week.
At first, she thought it was a coincidence.
Then she saw the same vehicle outside her school.
She became frightened.
But there was something even stranger.
The person sending the messages knew details about our family that a stranger shouldn’t know.
They knew when I left for work.
They knew when Emily came home from school.
They even knew that Linda was taking her shopping that afternoon.
I sat down.
“Someone is watching us.”
Linda nodded.
“That’s what I believe.”
Then she told me what happened at the salon.
Emily had refused to explain anything.
She simply sat in the chair and asked the stylist to cut everything off.
When the stylist asked why, Emily whispered:
“Because my mom’s life is more important than my hair.”
I covered my mouth.
My little girl had spent years protecting that hair.
She had once joked that she would be buried with it.
And now she had willingly given it up because she believed someone was threatening me.
Then Linda reached into the envelope again.
“There was one more thing.”
She handed me a photograph.
It showed Emily standing outside the salon.
But behind her, across the street, was the same dark vehicle she had described.
I stared at the license plate.
Then I recognized it.
My heart stopped.
That vehicle belonged to someone I knew.
Someone who had been inside our home.
Someone who had known Emily since she was little.
I looked at Linda.
“Who is that?”
She whispered the name.
And suddenly, every strange thing that had happened during the past month made sense.
But there was one question I couldn’t stop asking.
If this person was really threatening Emily…
why had they specifically wanted her hair cut?
Then Linda looked at me and said:
“Because they weren’t trying to change her appearance.”
“They were trying to make sure something couldn’t be found.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
Linda pointed toward the photograph.
“Look closely at Emily’s hair.”
I zoomed in.
And that’s when I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.
There was a tiny object tied into one of the strands.
A small metallic clip.
And inside that clip was something that could expose exactly who had been watching our family.
