My Sister Went Completely Silent When the Real Father Stood Up

PART 2 — My Sister Went Completely Silent When the Real Father Stood Up

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The band had stopped playing.

The DJ stared at me from behind his equipment.

Even the waiters seemed frozen.

Natalie looked at the laboratory report in my hand, then back at me.

>

“That’s impossible,” she whispered.

>

I handed the microphone to Grant.

He looked at the crowd and said calmly, “The DNA test confirms that Eric is not the biological father of Natalie’s unborn child.”

A wave of whispers swept through the ballroom.

Eric suddenly stood up.

“Nancy, what are you doing?”

I turned toward him.

“What I should have done four months ago.”

His face had gone pale.

Natalie shook her head violently.

“You’re lying!”

“I’m not,” I said.

I pointed toward Grant.

“He followed Eric and Natalie. He documented their meetings. He photographed the hotel visits. And he found something neither of you knew I had access to.”

Grant opened the red folder again.

Inside were photographs, hotel receipts, phone records, and copies of messages.

One photograph showed Eric kissing Natalie outside the hotel.

Another showed them entering an apartment together.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father whispered, “Oh my God.”

Eric started walking toward me.

“You had no right to investigate me!”

I laughed softly.

“No right?”

I looked around the room.

“This is my tenth wedding anniversary party. The party I paid for. The home we built. The marriage you destroyed.”

He lowered his voice.

“Nancy, please. Let’s talk privately.”

“No.”

That single word stopped him.

For years, I had allowed Eric to control every difficult conversation.

Not tonight.

Not anymore.

Then I turned toward Natalie.

“You said I could never give Eric a family.”

She stared at me with tears gathering in her eyes.

“I never said that.”

“You said it into a microphone in front of three hundred people.”

Her face tightened.

“Then tell everyone who the father really is.”

Silence.

Natalie looked around the room.

Her eyes stopped at the back.

Three tables away.

A man slowly stood.

His name was Daniel.

He was Natalie’s former fiancé.

The same man she had told our entire family had abandoned her six months earlier.

The room erupted.

My father slammed his hand against the table.

“Daniel?”

Daniel looked devastated.

“Natalie, I didn’t know.”

She backed away.

“You’re lying!”

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I have the messages.”

Grant immediately looked at me.

That was the piece of information I had been waiting for.

Daniel walked forward and showed the screen to my father.

There were dozens of messages from Natalie.

Messages sent before she ever became involved with Eric.

Messages begging Daniel to come back.

Messages telling him she was pregnant.

And then, one message that made the entire room go silent.

“I need you to disappear. If Eric thinks the baby is his, he’ll take care of everything.”

Eric stared at Natalie.

“You told me the baby was mine.”

Natalie began crying.

“You said you loved me!”

“I did!”

“And you said Nancy was the only thing standing between us!”

Eric looked at me.

For the first time that night, he had absolutely nothing to say.

Then Grant quietly placed another document on the table.

“There’s something else.”

I looked at him.

He nodded.

“This is why I told you to wait until tonight.”

He turned the document around.

It wasn’t another DNA report.

It was a copy of Eric’s financial records.

I recognized the account immediately.

It was an account Eric had never told me about.

Money had been transferred into it every month for nearly two years.

Thousands of dollars at a time.

I stared at the numbers.

“Where did this money come from?”

Grant answered.

“Your joint investment account.”

My stomach dropped.

Eric had been secretly moving our marital savings into a private account.

But there was more.

Grant pointed to several payments.

“Most of the money was transferred to an apartment.”

I looked at Natalie.

Her face collapsed.

“You were paying for her apartment?”

Eric didn’t answer.

I suddenly understood everything.

The secret meetings.

The missing money.

The weekend trips.

The lies.

This wasn’t an affair that had happened by accident.

It had been planned.

Funded.

Maintained.

For nearly two years.

My mother started crying.

“I can’t believe this.”

I looked at her.

“Neither can I.”

Then something unexpected happened.

Natalie walked toward me.

For one second, I thought she was going to apologize.

Instead, she whispered,

“You don’t know everything.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

She looked at Eric.

Then at Grant.

Then back at me.

“There is another reason Eric wanted you gone.”

My heart began pounding.

“What reason?”

She swallowed hard.

“He wasn’t planning to leave you.”

I frowned.

“Then what was he planning?”

Natalie looked terrified.

“He was planning to make it look like you had abandoned him.”

Eric suddenly shouted, “Natalie, shut up!”

Everyone turned toward him.

Grant’s expression changed.

He reached inside his jacket and pulled out one final envelope.

“I think Nancy deserves to see this.”

He handed it to me.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a legal document dated three months earlier.

At the top was my full name.

And underneath it was a sentence that made my blood run cold:

“In the event of Nancy’s death, Eric Carter will receive full control of all marital assets.”

I looked at Eric.

He didn’t deny it.

He simply stared at me.

And then I realized something much more frightening than the affair.

The woman standing beside me wasn’t the only person who had betrayed me.

My own husband had been preparing for a future without me.

A future that, according to the evidence in Grant’s folder, may have required me not to be alive.

And that’s when Detective Harris walked into the ballroom.

He looked directly at me and said,

“Mrs. Carter, we need you to come with us.”

I froze.

“Why?”

He glanced at Eric.

“Because we found something in your house tonight.”

Something connected to the night Eric thought I would never discover the truth.
