School Pizza Recipe

This nostalgic School Pizza tastes just like the rectangular pizza served in school cafeterias—soft crust, savory meat topping, and plenty of melted cheese.

Ingredients

For the Crust

  • 2 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup powdered milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

For the Sauce

  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

For the Topping

  • ½ pound ground beef
  • ½ pound Italian sausage
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, powdered milk, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. Add warm water and oil.
  3. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the Meat

  1. Brown the ground beef and sausage in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Drain excess grease.
  3. Set aside to cool slightly.

Step 3: Make the Sauce

  1. In a bowl, combine tomato sauce, oregano, basil, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Stir well and set aside.

Step 4: Assemble the Pizza

  1. Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  3. Press dough evenly into the pan.
  4. Bake the crust for 8 minutes.
  5. Remove from oven and spread sauce over the crust.
  6. Sprinkle cooked meat evenly over the sauce.
  7. Top with mozzarella cheese.

Step 5: Bake

  1. Return pizza to the oven.
  2. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and lightly golden.
  3. Let cool for 5 minutes.

Step 6: Serve

  1. Cut into rectangular slices just like the cafeteria version.
  2. Serve warm.

Tips

  • For authentic cafeteria flavor, use a blend of mozzarella and mild cheddar cheese.
  • A rectangular sheet pan gives the most traditional look.
  • Freeze leftovers and reheat in the oven for best results.
