TEN DAYS LATER, SHE FOUND SOMETHING HIDDEN

PART 2 — TEN DAYS LATER, SHE FOUND SOMETHING HIDDEN

Ten days after the wedding…

Amara woke up before sunrise.

The house was unusually quiet.

Her husband, Daniel, had already left for his morning walk.

>

She walked downstairs to make coffee when she noticed something strange.

>

The study door was open.

Daniel always kept that room locked.

Always.

Amara stood in the hallway for several seconds.

Then curiosity got the better of her.

She stepped inside.

Everything looked perfectly organized.

Books lined the shelves.

Old photographs covered one wall.

And on the desk sat a small wooden box.

There was no lock.

She opened it.

Inside were dozens of letters.

All addressed to Daniel.

But the oldest letter was addressed to a woman named Margaret.

Amara had never heard that name before.

She opened it.

The first sentence made her heart stop.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, then she has finally married you.”

Amara read the sentence again.

Her hands began trembling.

Who was “she”?

And why had someone written about her marriage years before it happened?

She opened another letter.

Then another.

Every letter contained the same warning.

**“Do not tell her the truth until she finds the blue photograph.”**

Amara immediately began searching the desk.

Drawers.

Cabinets.

Old files.

Nothing.

Then she noticed something behind a framed photograph.

A tiny blue corner was sticking out.

She pulled the frame away from the wall.

Behind it was an old photograph.

Daniel was standing beside a much younger woman.

Amara stared at the woman.

She recognized her immediately.

It was the woman from the letters.

Margaret.

But that wasn’t the shocking part.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.

It was exactly thirty years earlier.

And beneath the date were five words:

**“She is still alive.”**

Amara dropped the photograph.

A noise suddenly came from the hallway.

Someone was standing outside the study.

She turned.

Daniel was there.

He wasn’t angry.

He looked frightened.

“Amara,” he whispered.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”

She stepped backward.

“Who is Margaret?”

Daniel closed the door behind him.

Then he locked it.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Finally, he sat down.

“Margaret was my first wife.”

Amara’s heart pounded.

“First wife?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to her?”

Daniel looked toward the old photograph.

“She disappeared thirty years ago.”

Amara stared at him.

“Then why do your letters say she’s alive?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached inside his jacket and pulled out an old newspaper clipping.

He placed it on the desk.

The headline read:

**LOCAL WOMAN DISAPPEARS WITHOUT A TRACE**

Amara read the article.

Then she noticed the photograph printed underneath.

Her face went pale.

Because the missing woman wasn’t Margaret.

It was someone else.

Someone Amara had met only two days earlier.

Daniel’s longtime housekeeper.

Amara looked up.

“Why is she in this article?”

Daniel’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Because she isn’t my housekeeper.”

“Then who is she?”

Daniel stared at Amara.

“She is Margaret.”

Before Amara could respond…

The lights suddenly went out.

A door slammed somewhere downstairs.

Then they heard footsteps moving slowly toward the study.

Daniel grabbed Amara’s hand.

“Whatever happens…”

“Don’t open that door.”

But the footsteps stopped directly outside.

Then a woman’s voice whispered through the darkness:

“Daniel…”

Amara froze.

She recognized the voice.

It belonged to the woman who had been serving them dinner every night.

Then the doorknob slowly began to turn.
