THE “BEGGAR” AT THE ALTAR WASN’T WHO JULIÁN THOUGHT HE WAS — AND HIS FIRST MOVE LEFT THE ENTIRE CHURCH SPEECHLESS
The priest looked from me to Lando, clearly uncomfortable with the spectacle Julián had created.
“Shall we begin?”
I swallowed hard.
“Yes.”
Lando said nothing.
He simply looked at me and gave the smallest nod, almost as if he were telling me, Trust me.
I had no idea why.
The ceremony continued while cameras flashed from every direction.
Julián sat in the front row with a champagne smile on his face.
He thought he had won.
He thought he had taken the woman who once loved him and turned her into a public joke.
But then the priest reached the vows.
“Do you, Lando, take Clara—”
“I do.”
His voice suddenly changed.
It was deep.
Clear.
Confident.
The laughter in the cathedral disappeared.
People stared at him.
Even I froze.
That wasn’t the voice of a frightened homeless man.
Lando turned toward me.
“And I promise,” he continued quietly, “that no one will ever humiliate you again.”
Julián’s smile disappeared.
“What’s going on?” he demanded.
Lando slowly turned toward him.
For the first time, the filthy beard and battered clothing suddenly seemed like a disguise rather than reality.
“You wanted cameras here, Julián,” Lando said.
“So let’s give them something worth recording.”
A murmur spread through the cathedral.
Lando reached inside his torn jacket and pulled out a small black phone.
He tapped the screen.
A large monitor that had been installed for the media suddenly came alive.
Documents appeared.
Bank transfers.
Investment agreements.
Shell companies.
Private messages.
And then one document appeared that made Julián stand so quickly that his chair crashed backward.
It was a confidential acquisition agreement involving Julián’s company.
The buyer’s name was clearly visible.
Landon Reyes.
I looked at Lando in disbelief.
The priest lowered his glasses.
Several journalists rushed toward the screen.
Julián’s face had gone completely white.
“You can’t possibly own that company,” he shouted.
Lando smiled.
“You’re right.”
He paused.
“I don’t own it.”
Julián exhaled in relief.
Then Lando finished:
“Not yet.”
The screen changed again.
A financial statement appeared showing that Lando’s investment group had quietly purchased enough shares to begin a hostile takeover.
The room erupted.
Julián looked toward his lawyers.
“Tell me this is fake!”
One of them was already staring at his phone.
Then his face fell.
“Sir…”
“What?”
“The stock price just collapsed.”
Julián’s phone began ringing.
Then another.
Then another.
His investors were calling.
His board members.
His bankers.
Everyone.
Meanwhile, Lando calmly removed his jacket.
Underneath the filthy shirt was a perfectly tailored white dress shirt.
He reached up and pulled away the fake beard.
The entire cathedral gasped.
The man standing beside me no longer looked like a beggar.
He looked like a powerful businessman.
He turned toward the cameras.
“My name is Lando Reyes. For the last eighteen months, I have been investigating Julián Valverde’s company.”
He looked directly at Julián.
“And today, you gave me exactly what I needed.”
Julián’s expression changed from anger to fear.
Then Lando leaned closer to me and whispered:
“Your mother’s surgery has already been paid for.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“But why would you do all this for me?”
He looked at me gently.
“Because Clara…”
He paused.
“I knew your father.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Lando looked toward Julián.
“And your father’s death wasn’t an accident.”
The cathedral went completely silent.
Then he handed me another document.
At the top was my father’s name.
Beneath it was Julián’s signature.
I stared at the page, unable to breathe.
The man I thought had destroyed my family had been hiding something far worse.
And now, in front of every camera he had invited to humiliate me…
Julián was finally going to answer for it.
