The CEO Took the Microphone—Then Asked Adrian One Question That Made His “Wife” Drop Her Glass

The entire terrace went silent.

Thomas Vale stood beneath the string lights, microphone in hand.

Adrian was frozen several yards away.

The woman in the coral dress looked confused.

I simply watched.

>

Thomas glanced at me first.

>

Then he looked at Adrian.

“Adrian,” he said calmly, “would you like to explain why you brought this woman here and introduced her as your wife?”

A murmur swept through the crowd.

Adrian swallowed.

“She’s—”

He stopped.

The woman beside him stepped forward.

“My name is Vanessa.”

Thomas nodded.

“Yes. Vanessa Hale.”

The moment he said her last name, her face changed.

I noticed.

So did Adrian.

Thomas continued.

“Vanessa, do you know that Adrian has been married to Claire Bennett for eleven years?”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“You told me you were divorced.”

My heart actually hurt hearing her say it.

Adrian immediately stepped toward her.

“Vanessa, let me explain.”

She backed away.

“You said the divorce was finalized months ago.”

“It was complicated.”

“No,” she whispered. “You told me it was done.”

Thomas lowered the microphone.

“It was never done.”

The whispers around us grew louder.

Someone near the bar quietly said, “Oh my God.”

I looked at Adrian.

For eleven years, he had called me his wife.

Apparently, for the last few months, he had been calling someone else the same thing.

But Thomas wasn’t finished.

He turned toward the guests.

“There is something else everyone needs to understand.”

Adrian’s face went pale.

“Thomas, don’t.”

The CEO ignored him.

“This isn’t simply an affair.”

He held up a folder.

“Three months ago, I asked our legal department to investigate irregular expense reports connected to Adrian’s department.”

Adrian stared at the folder.

I suddenly understood why Thomas had looked frightened when he first saw Vanessa.

There was more.

Much more.

Thomas opened the folder.

“Several company payments were made to an outside consulting firm.”

He looked directly at Adrian.

“That company is registered under the name Vanessa Hale.”

Vanessa’s mouth fell open.

“What?”

Thomas continued.

“The payments total more than $280,000.”

The crowd erupted into shocked whispers.

Vanessa turned toward Adrian.

“You told me that money came from your private investments.”

Adrian couldn’t answer.

Then Thomas said something that made my stomach drop.

“The company doesn’t appear to provide any legitimate consulting services.”

I looked at Adrian.

He finally looked at me.

His eyes were pleading.

“Claire, please.”

I shook my head.

“Don’t.”

For the first time in eleven years, I didn’t care whether he was embarrassed.

I cared about the truth.

Thomas closed the folder.

“And that’s why the company party was never postponed.”

Adrian looked down.

Thomas continued.

“We wanted to see who Adrian would bring.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You knew?”

Thomas nodded.

“We suspected something was wrong. We didn’t know exactly what.”

He looked at me.

“Until tonight.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas hesitated.

Then he reached into the folder and pulled out another document.

“This was submitted to our legal department yesterday.”

He handed it to me.

I read the first page.

It was a beneficiary designation.

My name had been removed from several company-related benefits.

Vanessa’s name had been added.

But the date was what stopped me.

The change had been made two days before Adrian told me the party was postponed.

I looked up.

“You were planning to leave.”

Adrian said nothing.

Thomas answered for him.

“According to what we’ve uncovered, yes.”

Adrian finally spoke.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

He stared at me.

“When you were gone?”

His silence was answer enough.

Then Vanessa suddenly laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

It was the sound of someone realizing she’d been deceived too.

She looked at Adrian.

“You told me she was unstable.”

My heart sank.

“You told me she was keeping you trapped.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Vanessa, please.”

“You told me you were going to marry me.”

Thomas stepped between them.

“Apparently he told both of you whatever he needed to keep each story alive.”

I looked around the terrace.

People who had known Adrian for years were staring at him differently now.

His carefully built image was collapsing in front of everyone.

But I wasn’t interested in watching him lose his reputation.

I wanted something else.

I looked at Thomas.

“What happens now?”

He answered quietly.

“The company will conduct a formal investigation.”

Then he looked at Adrian.

“And until it’s complete, you’re suspended.”

Adrian’s face went completely blank.

He looked at me.

“Claire…”

I picked up my purse.

“You lied about the party.”

He said nothing.

“You lied about Vanessa.”

Still nothing.

“And apparently, you’ve been lying about our entire marriage.”

I walked toward the exit.

Behind me, I heard Vanessa say:

“You told me I was your future.”

I stopped for half a second.

Then I heard Adrian answer:

“I was wrong.”

I didn’t turn around.

Because the truth was finally out.

And as I drove home that night, I realized something Adrian had never understood.

He thought the biggest danger was me discovering Vanessa.

He was wrong.

The real danger was that the people around him had finally discovered him.

And the next morning, when I opened my email, I found a message from Thomas.

There was one attachment.

The subject line read:

“What We Found About Adrian’s Previous Transfers.”

I opened it.

And immediately called my attorney.

Because the $280,000 wasn’t the biggest number in the report.

Not even close.
