THE FORECLOSURE

PART 2 — THE FORECLOSURE

My finger hovered over the red button.

For years, I had learned one lesson about power:

Real power doesn’t need to announce itself.

I pressed it.

>

“Execute.”

>

That was all I said.

Richard stared at me.

“What exactly did you just do?”

I slipped my phone into my handbag.

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

Victoria laughed.

“Oh, please. You’re still pretending to be important?”

“No,” I said calmly.

“I’m finished pretending to be unimportant.”

Liam finally looked at me.

“What does that mean?”

Before I could answer, the police boat moved closer.

The yacht fell silent.

A uniformed officer stepped onto the deck.

Behind him came a man in an immaculate navy suit carrying a leather folder.

I recognized him immediately.

Arthur Collins.

Chief Legal Officer of Sovereign Trust.

The bank everyone on that yacht knew.

The bank Richard had spent years borrowing from.

Arthur walked directly toward me.

He didn’t look at Richard.

He didn’t look at Victoria.

He stopped in front of me.

Then he straightened his jacket.

“Madam President.”

The entire deck went silent.

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

Liam lowered his sunglasses.

Richard slowly removed his cigar from his mouth.

Arthur continued.

“The foreclosure documents are ready for your signature.”

Nobody moved.

Liam stared at me.

“Madam… President?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

Richard suddenly laughed.

It sounded nervous.

“This is some kind of joke.”

Arthur turned toward him.

“No, sir.”

“It isn’t.”

He opened the folder.

“Richard Harrington, your company has been in default for ninety-three days.”

Richard’s face changed.

“We’re negotiating.”

“You were.”

Arthur calmly turned a page.

“Your debt was acquired this morning by Vantage Capital.”

Richard swallowed.

“That can’t be possible.”

I finally looked at him.

“It is.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“You’re telling me that little coffee-shop waitress owns Vantage Capital?”

Arthur looked at her.

“She doesn’t work at the coffee shop.”

He paused.

“She owns it.”

Victoria’s mouth fell open.

I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Liam stared at me as if he had never seen me before.

“Who are you?”

I took a breath.

“My name is Amelia Grant.”

“I founded Vantage Capital.”

“And this morning, my company acquired your family’s distressed debt.”

Richard’s face went completely white.

“You planned this?”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I didn’t know you were going to humiliate me today.”

I looked at Victoria.

“I didn’t know you were going to shove me toward the ocean.”

Then I looked at Liam.

“And I certainly didn’t know the man I loved would watch it happen and tell me to go downstairs.”

Liam took a step toward me.

“Amelia, wait.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“Please.”

“You had eight months to stand beside me.”

“You chose your parents.”

He lowered his head.

Arthur placed the foreclosure documents on the table.

“Madam President, there is one more matter.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“The yacht itself.”

Richard suddenly stepped forward.

“What about it?”

Arthur calmly replied,

“The yacht is also collateral.”

Richard froze.

“You can’t take my yacht.”

Arthur smiled politely.

“Technically, sir, it isn’t yours.”

“You’ve leased it through Sovereign Trust.”

“And your lease is now in default.”

Victoria grabbed Richard’s arm.

“This is insane.”

I looked at them.

“No.”

“This is paperwork.”

The same paperwork you used to make people feel powerless.

The same paperwork you believed would always protect you.

Richard’s voice became desperate.

“Give me thirty days.”

I shook my head.

“You had ninety-three.”

“Sixty?”

“No.”

“Two weeks!”

I looked at Arthur.

“What’s the legal position?”

“The assets can be frozen immediately.”

Richard’s shoulders dropped.

Victoria suddenly turned toward Liam.

“Do something!”

Liam looked completely lost.

“What am I supposed to do?”

“You’re her boyfriend!”

He looked at me.

“I was.”

That sentence hurt.

But strangely…

It also freed me.

Liam walked toward me.

“Amelia, I swear I didn’t know about any of this.”

“You didn’t know I owned the bank?”

“No.”

“You didn’t know about the acquisition?”

“No.”

“You didn’t know your parents were drowning in debt?”

He hesitated.

“I knew they were having financial problems.”

I stared at him.

“And you still let your mother treat me like garbage.”

He had no answer.

I picked up the pen.

Signed the first document.

Then the second.

Arthur collected them.

“The foreclosure process will begin immediately.”

Richard sank into a chair.

Victoria stood completely frozen.

Then she looked at me.

“Why?”

I paused.

“Why would you do this to us?”

I looked toward the ocean.

The same water I had nearly fallen into minutes earlier.

“Because you taught me something today.”

She waited.

“You taught me that people reveal who they really are when they think you have nothing.”

I turned back toward her.

“And now you get to meet the person you never bothered to see.”

I walked toward the stairs.

Liam followed.

“Amelia!”

I stopped.

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Was any of it real?”

I turned around.

“Yes.”

“All of it.”

“That was the problem.”

I walked away.

But just as I reached the lower deck, Arthur’s phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression changed.

“Madam President?”

I turned.

“What is it?”

He lowered the phone.

“The auditors found something.”

“What?”

He looked toward Richard.

“There was a second company.”

“A shell company.”

“And someone has been secretly transferring money out of Richard’s business for years.”

My heart tightened.

“Who owns it?”

Arthur looked at the document on his screen.

Then slowly raised his eyes toward me.

“Liam.”

The deck went silent.

I stared at my former boyfriend.

He looked terrified.

And suddenly…

I realized the betrayal was much bigger than I had ever imagined.

Because Liam hadn’t simply stood by while his family destroyed me.

He had been helping them.

And the evidence Arthur had just found…

Could send someone to prison.
