The Letter Owen Left Behind

Part 2 — The Letter Owen Left Behind

I stared at those first lines until the words blurred behind my tears.

“Mom, I knew this letter would somehow reach you…”

I pressed one trembling hand against my mouth.

“Mrs. Dilmore,” I whispered, “did Owen ever say anything to you about being afraid?”

She shook her head slowly.

>

“Not directly. But now that I think about it… there were things he said that I didn’t understand at the time.”

>

My heart began pounding.

I looked back at the letter.

The next paragraph was written in darker, heavier pencil, as though Owen had been pressing so hard that the paper nearly tore.

“Dad told me never to tell you what happens at the lake.”

I stopped breathing.

I read it again.

Then again.

My husband had always described that lake trip as a harmless family tradition.

Fishing.

Boating.

Campfires.

Father-and-son time.

But Owen’s letter continued.

“He gets angry when I ask questions. He says I’m too young to understand. But Mom, I understand more than he thinks.”

My knees weakened.

I lowered myself into Mrs. Dilmore’s chair.

“What happened there?” she whispered.

I couldn’t answer.

I kept reading.

“Three days before we went to the lake, Dad told me something was going to happen. He said if anyone asked, I should say I fell into the water by myself.”

My hand froze over the page.

A cold feeling spread through my entire body.

I looked up at the teacher.

“He knew?”

She stared at me.

“Knew what?”

I slowly turned the paper around.

Her eyes moved across the sentence.

Her face went white.

Then I noticed something written at the bottom of the page.

A time.

4:30 PM.

And underneath it:

“Mom, if you’re reading this, don’t believe Dad.”

I felt sick.

The official report said Owen had fallen into the lake during a storm at approximately 4:45.

But according to his letter, he had written this before that day.

Before the accident.

Before anyone knew he would disappear.

My fingers began shaking violently as I turned to the next page.

There were only four words.

“Dad planned everything.”

I couldn’t speak.

Mrs. Dilmore reached for my shoulder.

Then her expression suddenly changed.

“Wait.”

“What?”

She pointed at the envelope.

“There was something else inside.”

She carefully reached into the drawer where she’d found it and pulled out a tiny folded piece of paper.

“This was stuck underneath the envelope.”

I opened it.

It wasn’t written in Owen’s handwriting.

It was a short message.

“If she finds this, tell her to check the boat.”

My heart stopped.

The boat.

The same boat my husband had told police was swept away during the storm.

The same boat everyone believed had disappeared with Owen.

I suddenly stood up.

“I need to go home.”

Mrs. Dilmore grabbed my arm.

“Why?”

“Because my husband isn’t at work today.”

She stared at me.

“How do you know?”

I pulled out my phone.

There were three missed calls from him.

All from the last twenty minutes.

Then another message appeared.

“Where are you?”

A second message followed.

“We need to talk.”

And then a third.

“I know you found Owen’s letter.”

My blood ran cold.

Because there was only one person who could have known about that letter.

My husband.

I looked at Mrs. Dilmore.

“He knows.”

And just before I could leave the classroom, her phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed instantly.

Then she slowly held the phone toward me.

It was a voicemail from Owen.

Recorded the night before he disappeared.

And the first thing my son said was:

“Mom… if Dad finds out I told you, you may be next.”
