THE MISTRESS OPENED THE DOOR… AND THE TRUTH LEFT HER SPEECHLESS

PART 2 — THE MISTRESS OPENED THE DOOR… AND THE TRUTH LEFT HER SPEECHLESS

The door opened slowly.

She expected to see her husband.

Instead, the other woman stood there.

But she wasn’t smiling.

Her eyes were red, as if she hadn’t slept either.

>

“Come inside,” she whispered.

>

The woman hesitated.

Her children stood behind her, holding onto her coat.

“I don’t understand,” she said. “Why did you give me that money? Why did you tell me to come back?”

The mistress stepped aside.

“Because you deserve to know what really happened.”

She walked inside.

The house looked exactly the same.

The children’s shoes were still near the stairs.

Family photographs still covered the hallway.

Her wedding picture was still hanging above the fireplace.

She stopped when she saw it.

“I thought he had thrown everything away.”

“He wanted you to believe that,” the other woman said.

Then she led her into the living room.

Her husband was sitting there.

But something about him was different.

He looked exhausted.

Broken.

And beside him sat an attorney.

Her heart began pounding.

“What is this?”

The attorney stood.

“Mrs. Anderson, please sit down.”

She didn’t.

“I have no reason to trust any of you.”

The mistress looked at her.

“You’re right.”

Then she took a deep breath.

“I lied to your husband.”

The woman stared at her.

“What?”

“I was never his girlfriend.”

Silence filled the room.

The children looked confused.

The woman could barely speak.

“Then who are you?”

The mistress lowered her eyes.

“My name is Claire. I’m a private investigator.”

Her husband’s face turned pale.

Claire continued.

“Your husband hired me six months ago because he believed someone was stealing money from his company.”

The woman looked at him.

“Then why did you throw us out?”

He finally spoke.

“Because I needed them to believe I had lost everything.”

She shook her head.

“You destroyed our family for an investigation?”

“I know,” he whispered.

“You don’t know what you did.”

“I do.”

He stood slowly.

“And I regret every second.”

Claire placed a folder on the table.

“Your husband discovered that someone inside the company had been transferring money into secret accounts.”

The woman opened the folder.

Her eyes widened.

The name on the documents belonged to someone she knew.

Her husband’s own business partner.

But there was more.

Claire pointed to another document.

“He planned to take control of the company completely. Your husband realized that if he confronted him directly, your family could be in danger.”

“So he made everyone believe our marriage was over?”

“Yes.”

The woman looked at her husband with tears in her eyes.

“You could have told me.”

“I couldn’t.”

“You could have trusted me.”

He lowered his head.

“I was trying to protect you.”

She shook her head.

“You protected me so badly that you broke my heart.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire pushed another envelope across the table.

“This is why I gave you the money.”

The woman opened it.

Inside was a bank statement.

The $10,000 wasn’t a gift.

It was proof.

A payment had been made to Claire from the hidden account.

And the transaction contained a message:

“If she comes back, finish the plan.”

The woman felt cold all over.

“Who wrote this?”

Claire looked at her husband.

“That’s what we’re here to find out.”

Suddenly, the front door slammed.

Everyone turned.

Someone had entered the house.

Claire immediately reached for her phone.

Her husband whispered:

“He knows.”

The children moved closer to their mother.

Footsteps approached from the hallway.

Slow.

Heavy.

Then a man’s voice called out:

“You shouldn’t have come back.”

The woman recognized the voice immediately.

It was her husband’s business partner.

The man who had supposedly been out of town.

Claire stepped in front of the family.

“Stay behind me.”

The woman grabbed her children’s hands.

Her husband looked at her.

“I am so sorry.”

She didn’t answer.

Because in that moment, she finally understood.

The $10,000 hadn’t been meant to help her survive three days.

It had been meant to make sure she returned.

And now she was standing in the middle of a secret that could destroy everyone.

Claire quietly locked the door.

Then she whispered:

“Whatever happens next, don’t let him know what you found in that folder.”

The woman looked down.

One final document was still inside.

And across the top were five words that made her blood run cold:

“THE CHILDREN ARE THE TARGET.”
