The Name on Luke’s Envelope Was Connected to My Children—and the Truth Broke Me

PART 2: The Name on Luke’s Envelope Was Connected to My Children—and the Truth Broke Me

I stared at the envelope.

I knew that name.

There was no possible mistake.

It was the name of the attorney who had handled my children’s estate after the accident.

“Luke,” I whispered, “where did you get this?”

>

He looked down.

>

“It was given to me by someone at the foster agency.”

“Why?”

“Because they told me never to open it unless I was adopted.”

My hands began trembling.

I carefully unfolded the papers inside.

The first page was dated three years earlier.

The same month my children died.

My heart began pounding.

“What does this have to do with my children?”

Luke swallowed.

“Everything.”

He explained that before the accident, my son had been helping at a community center where Luke occasionally spent time.

They had never been related.

But my son had noticed Luke immediately.

He had been one of the first adults to ask why Luke kept moving from family to family.

“He didn’t believe I was the problem,” Luke whispered.

My eyes filled with tears.

“He kept asking questions.”

“What questions?”

“Why nobody would tell him what happened to my parents.”

I froze.

Luke’s biological mother had died when he was young.

His father had disappeared from his life.

At least, that was what his records said.

But the envelope contained something completely different.

A copy of an old guardianship document.

My son had apparently discovered that Luke’s father had once worked for a company connected to my late husband’s business.

And there had been a dispute over missing financial records.

Luke’s father had tried to expose something.

Then, suddenly, he disappeared.

I looked at Luke.

“Are you saying my son knew about this?”

Luke nodded.

“He was trying to find out what happened.”

My hands shook.

“But why did you get sent back from ten different families?”

Luke’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because every time someone got too close to the truth, somebody made sure I was moved.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“What truth?”

Luke reached into the envelope and pulled out a photograph.

It showed a younger man standing beside my husband.

I recognized both of them.

The third person in the photograph was Luke’s father.

On the back, my son had written:

“If anything happens to me, protect Luke.”

I covered my mouth.

My son had known.

He had somehow known that Luke was in danger.

And then the accident happened.

For three years, I had believed I lost both of my children in a tragic accident.

Now I was beginning to wonder whether the word “accident” was accurate at all.

Luke reached across the table.

“Mom, that’s why I was scared to tell you.”

I looked at him.

“You thought I’d send you away?”

He nodded.

“Everyone eventually does.”

I pulled him into my arms.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

He began crying against my shoulder.

But then he whispered something that made me release him.

“Mom…”

“What?”

“There’s one more page.”

I looked at the envelope.

He handed it to me.

The final page contained a single sentence written in my son’s handwriting.

“Mom, if Luke ever finds his way to you, don’t trust the person who told you my death was an accident.”

I couldn’t move.

For three years, I had trusted that person completely.

He had comforted me.

He had helped me through the funeral.

He had even encouraged me to adopt Luke.

And now I realized something terrifying.

Luke hadn’t been placed in my home by coincidence.

Someone had deliberately brought him to me.

But I still didn’t know why.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name I hadn’t seen in three years.

My son’s name.
