THE NOTE ON THE SHEET REVEALED WHY MY MOTHER-IN-LAW HAD TAKEN MY BED

PART 2 — THE NOTE ON THE SHEET REVEALED WHY MY MOTHER-IN-LAW HAD TAKEN MY BED

On the white sheet…

there was a tiny envelope.

My name was written across it.

Not my husband’s.

>

Not my mother-in-law’s.

>

Mine.

I stared at it for several seconds before reaching down and picking it up.

My hands were shaking.

I looked at my husband.

He was still asleep.

My mother-in-law suddenly opened her eyes.

The moment she saw the envelope in my hand, her expression changed.

“Where did you get that?”

I stepped backward.

“It was on my bed.”

She immediately sat up.

“Don’t open it.”

That was the moment I knew something was terribly wrong.

“Why?”

She looked toward my sleeping husband.

Then she whispered,

“Because once you read it, your marriage will never be the same.”

My heart pounded.

I tore open the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed my husband standing beside another woman.

They were holding hands.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

Six months before our wedding.

I looked at my mother-in-law.

“Who is she?”

She lowered her eyes.

“My son’s first wife.”

I felt the room spin.

“First wife?”

She nodded.

“She didn’t disappear.”

My voice trembled.

“Then where is she?”

My mother-in-law pointed toward the locked second-floor room.

“The woman in that photograph has been living in this house.”

I couldn’t speak.

“Your husband told you she was an old family friend, didn’t he?”

I remembered the woman I had seen once during our engagement.

The woman my husband had quickly introduced as “a distant relative.”

My stomach turned.

“Why would you let me marry him?”

Tears appeared in my mother-in-law’s eyes.

“Because I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“This makes no sense.”

She reached beneath the pillow and pulled out another document.

“Your father gave this to me before the wedding.”

I unfolded it.

It was a copy of a legal agreement.

And my name was on it.

So was my husband’s.

But the date was from before we had even met.

I looked at her in disbelief.

“What is this?”

She whispered:

“Your husband didn’t marry you for love.”

My blood ran cold.

“He married you because of something your father owned.”

Before I could ask another question, my husband suddenly opened his eyes.

He looked directly at the document in my hand.

His face went completely white.

“Mom…”

She stood up.

“It’s over, Daniel.”

He got out of bed.

“What did you tell her?”

I stepped between them.

“No.”

My voice surprised even me.

“You’re going to tell me everything.”

He stared at me.

Then he slowly sat down.

After several seconds, he whispered:

“Your father knew I was going to betray you.”

I felt my knees weaken.

“And he still allowed you to marry me?”

My husband looked down.

“No.”

He swallowed.

“He didn’t.”

“Then why did we get married?”

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Because your father had already made a deal with me.”

My heart stopped.

“What deal?”

My mother-in-law closed the bedroom door.

Then she locked it.

And whispered the words that changed everything:

“Your father didn’t die naturally.”
