PART 2 — MY SON STOOD UP AND TOLD HIS FATHER THE TRUTH ABOUT ME
Jake remained standing.
His hands were trembling, but his voice wasn’t.
“Dad, do you know what Mom did this morning?”
Damon rolled his eyes.
“Jake, sit down. This is between your mother and me.”
“No.”
Jake shook his head.
“It stopped being between you and Mom when you humiliated her in front of strangers.”
The restaurant had gone completely silent.
My other two sons stared at their plates.
I could barely look up.
Jake turned toward me.
“Mom, I’m sorry.”
“For what?” I whispered.
“For pretending I didn’t notice.”
My heart tightened.
Jake continued.
“For twenty-five years, I’ve watched you put everyone before yourself. When Dad worked late, you waited. When we were sick, you stayed awake. When we needed something for school, you found a way to make it happen.”
He looked at Damon.
“And every time Mom wanted something for herself, you made her feel guilty.”
Damon’s face hardened.
“You’re exaggerating.”
“No, Dad. I’m finally telling the truth.”
Jake reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
“I brought this tonight because I knew Mom would probably never say it herself.”
He placed it in front of me.
I opened it.
Inside was a reservation confirmation.
A trip for two.
Jake smiled.
“It’s for you and your sister. A week in Italy.”
I stared at him.
“I can’t afford—”
“I already paid for it.”
My eyes filled with tears.
Damon suddenly laughed.
“This is ridiculous. You’re encouraging her to behave like a teenager.”
Jake turned toward him.
“No, Dad.”
His voice became quieter.
“We’re encouraging Mom to remember that she’s a person.”
Damon stopped smiling.
Then Jake said something that made the entire table freeze.
“Dad, I also know about the apartment.”
My husband went completely still.
I looked at Jake.
“What apartment?”
Damon’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?”
Jake pulled out his phone.
“I found the emails three weeks ago.”
Damon stood abruptly.
“Jake, that’s enough.”
“No.”
Jake looked directly at me.
“Mom deserves to know.”
My hands began shaking.
“What emails?”
Jake hesitated.
Then he showed me the screen.
There were messages between Damon and another woman.
The first one was dated eight months earlier.
“Once Elena turns fifty, I’ll finally be free.”
Another said:
“She’ll never suspect anything.”
And then I saw the message that broke something inside me.
“The apartment is ready. We can move in after her birthday.”
I couldn’t breathe.
Damon reached for the phone.
Jake stepped away.
“You embarrassed Mom tonight because you thought you had control over her.”
He looked at his father one last time.
“But you forgot something.”
“What?”
Jake pointed toward me.
“She doesn’t need your permission anymore.”
I slowly stood.
My tears were still falling.
But this time, I wasn’t crying because I felt ashamed.
I looked at Damon and calmly removed my wedding ring.
Then I placed it on the table.
“You wanted me to stop embarrassing you?”
His expression changed.
“Fine.”
I picked up my purse.
“I won’t.”
I walked toward the restaurant doors.
Behind me, Damon called my name.
But I didn’t turn around.
Because for the first time in twenty-five years…
I wasn’t walking away from my life.
I was finally walking toward it.
