Beneath the Shed

Story Part 2 — Beneath the Shed

The police officers stood silently at the entrance.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to go down.

Detective Bennett switched on her flashlight.

“Stay behind me.”

Noah stood beside his father, barely breathing.

>

Margaret had been taken back to the house.

>

She couldn’t bear to watch.

Daniel refused to leave.

“That could be my daughter down there.”

The detective slowly descended the narrow wooden stairs.

One step.

Then another.

The air became colder with every step.

At the bottom was a small corridor.

The walls were made of old concrete.

There were several doors.

One stood slightly open.

Detective Bennett pushed it wider.

Inside was a chair.

A small table.

An old lamp.

And a calendar hanging on the wall.

Noah stared at it.

The dates were circled.

Year after year.

The same day.

September 14.

The day Lily disappeared.

His stomach twisted.

“Why would someone keep this?”

Detective Bennett didn’t answer.

She was staring at the table.

There was a notebook sitting on it.

The same handwriting appeared throughout the pages.

Harold’s handwriting.

Noah’s hands began shaking.

“My grandfather…”

Detective Bennett opened the notebook.

The first pages contained dates.

Names.

Times.

Then, halfway through, she found something that made her stop.

A single sentence.

She is still alive.

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table.

“What?”

The detective continued reading.

Another page.

Then another.

Her expression became increasingly serious.

“There’s a record here.”

“Of what?”

“Visits.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Whose visits?”

The detective looked at him.

“Someone was coming here regularly.”

Noah stepped closer.

“Who?”

Before she could answer, one of the officers called from the hallway.

“Detective!”

Everyone turned.

He was standing beside another door.

“There are fresh footprints.”

Fresh.

That word changed everything.

The detective immediately raised her flashlight.

“Search every room.”

The officers spread out.

Noah followed his father.

They entered the next room.

It was almost empty.

Except for a bed.

A blanket.

A glass of water.

And a small sewing box.

Noah stared at it.

Three white flowers were embroidered across the lid.

His knees nearly gave out.

“That’s hers.”

Daniel picked up the box.

Inside were needles, thread, scraps of fabric…

And a photograph.

He unfolded it.

Lily.

Older.

But unmistakably Lily.

She was standing beside a window.

Noah covered his mouth.

“She’s alive.”

Daniel couldn’t speak.

Then Detective Bennett noticed something behind the photograph.

A handwritten message.

If they find this room, she has already escaped.

The detective looked up sharply.

“Escaped?”

From where?

Suddenly, they heard a noise.

A faint metallic sound.

Coming from somewhere beneath the floor.

Everyone froze.

There it was again.

Three knocks.

Then silence.

Noah whispered:

“Did you hear that?”

Detective Bennett immediately crouched.

She pressed her ear against the floor.

Three more knocks.

Someone was underneath them.

The officers began moving the furniture.

They discovered a concealed hatch beneath the bed.

Detective Bennett opened it.

A narrow passage disappeared into darkness.

“No one goes in until we secure it.”

But before anyone could stop him…

Daniel climbed down.

“Daniel!”

He ignored her.

“My daughter could be down there.”

Noah followed.

The passage stretched beneath the house.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

Pictures of Lily.

At sixteen.

At seventeen.

At twenty.

At twenty-five.

Someone had been watching her.

For years.

At the end of the passage was another door.

Daniel grabbed the handle.

Locked.

Then they heard something from the other side.

A woman’s voice.

Weak.

Barely audible.

“Dad?”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Noah’s heart exploded with hope.

“Lily?”

Silence.

Then the voice came again.

“Is that Noah?”

Noah began crying.

“Lily!”

Detective Bennett rushed forward.

“Step back.”

The officers forced the door open.

And there she was.

A woman sitting beneath a blanket.

Older.

Thinner.

Her hair streaked with gray.

But her eyes were exactly the same.

Noah collapsed to his knees.

“Lily…”

She covered her mouth.

“Noah?”

He nodded through his tears.

She stared at him.

“You grew up.”

He laughed and cried at the same time.

“I waited for you.”

Lily looked toward the hallway.

Then her expression suddenly changed.

“You have to leave.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?”

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“Because Harold wasn’t the only person who knew I was here.”

Detective Bennett stepped closer.

“Who else?”

Lily looked directly at her.

Then she said something that made everyone in the room freeze.

“The person who put me here…”

“Is still alive.”

And before she could say another word…

They heard footsteps coming from the passage behind them.

Someone was walking toward the room.

Slowly.

Calmly.

As though they knew exactly where everyone was.

Detective Bennett raised her weapon.

“Everyone stay behind me.”

The footsteps stopped.

Then a familiar voice echoed through the darkness.

A voice Noah had heard his entire childhood.

And when he recognized it…

He realized the truth about Lily’s disappearance was far worse than anyone had imagined.
