The Truth About Ethan

Story Part 2 — The Truth About Ethan

Mom’s hands were still trembling.

I had never seen her look that frightened.

“Mom…”

She wiped her eyes.

“There is something I should have told you a long time ago.”

>

I waited.

>

She took a deep breath.

“Ethan’s mother and I knew each other before you were born.”

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with prom?”

“Everything.”

She looked toward the locked bedroom door.

“Twenty years ago, before you were born, I worked at the hospital where Ethan was delivered.”

My heart began beating faster.

Mom continued.

“His birth was complicated. His mother was terrified. She was young, overwhelmed, and completely alone.”

I listened silently.

“She asked me to stay with her.”

Mom’s voice cracked.

“I promised her I would.”

“Then what happened?”

Mom looked down.

“She disappeared.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

“She left the hospital without telling anyone where she was going.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“And Ethan?”

“His father wasn’t there. His grandparents were out of state. There was nobody.”

Mom squeezed my hands.

“So I stayed.”

She paused.

“I became the person who made sure he was safe until his family could take over.”

I felt tears forming.

“But why didn’t you ever tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

Mom looked directly into my eyes.

“That you would feel responsible for him.”

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to decide that for me.”

“I know.”

She started crying.

“And that’s why I need you to hear the rest.”

My heart sank.

“What rest?”

Mom reached into her purse.

She pulled out an old photograph.

It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.

I recognized the baby immediately.

Ethan.

But the woman holding him wasn’t Ethan’s mother.

It was Mom.

I stared at the picture.

“Mom…”

She whispered,

“His mother gave me this photograph.”

“Why?”

“Because she asked me to protect him if she couldn’t.”

I couldn’t speak.

Then Mom said something that changed everything.

“She didn’t disappear because she didn’t love him.”

“Then why?”

Mom’s eyes filled with tears.

“She was sick.”

I covered my mouth.

“She knew she might not live long enough to raise him.”

The room became completely silent.

“She left because she believed another family could give Ethan a better life.”

I looked at the photograph again.

“But she stayed in touch, didn’t she?”

Mom shook her head.

“Not directly.”

“What does that mean?”

“She watched him from a distance.”

I stared at her.

“Then why didn’t she come back?”

Mom hesitated.

“Because she died when Ethan was three.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“Oh my God.”

Mom reached for me.

“I know.”

“But there is something else.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

Mom pulled another folded document from her purse.

“This is the reason I didn’t want you going to prom with Ethan.”

I opened it.

At the top was Ethan’s full name.

Below it was another name.

My name.

I looked at Mom in confusion.

“What is this?”

She whispered:

“His mother left something for you.”

My heart stopped.

“For me?”

“Yes.”

“She left instructions.”

“About what?”

Mom looked toward the bedroom window.

“About Ethan’s future.”

I read the document again.

Then I noticed a handwritten sentence at the bottom.

“When they are old enough to understand, tell them the truth.”

My hands began shaking.

“Mom…”

She nodded.

“That’s why I locked the door.”

“What truth?”

She took my hands again.

“The reason Ethan remembers you from first grade…”

“The reason he trusted you immediately…”

“The reason I never once tried to stop your friendship…”

She paused.

Then whispered:

“Because I knew his mother wanted you in his life.”

I started crying.

“But that’s not a condition for prom.”

Mom shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

“The condition isn’t that you go with Ethan.”

“It’s that before you leave tonight…”

“You tell him everything.”

I froze.

“Everything?”

Mom nodded.

“About his mother.”

“About the promise she made.”

“And about the letter she left for him.”

My heart raced.

“There is a letter?”

Mom reached into her purse one final time.

She pulled out a small sealed envelope.

Ethan’s name was written across it.

And beneath his name were four words:

Open this on prom night.

I stared at the envelope.

After twelve years of friendship…

After a childhood promise…

After everything Ethan and I had been through…

I suddenly understood why Mom had looked terrified.

Because this wasn’t just about a dance.

It was about a promise made before either of us was old enough to remember.

I stood.

“I’m going to give this to him.”

Mom nodded.

Then she whispered:

“But there’s one thing you need to know first.”

“What?”

Her face went pale.

“The letter isn’t the only thing Ethan’s mother left behind.”

She pointed toward the envelope.

“There is something else inside.”

“And when Ethan sees it…”

“He may finally understand why she chose you.”

I opened the bedroom door.

Ethan was waiting downstairs with the corsage in his hand.

He smiled when he saw me.

But when he noticed the envelope…

His smile disappeared.

“What’s that?”

I looked at him.

“It’s from your mother.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

And for the first time in twelve years…

I saw the little boy who once asked me to promise we’d go to prom together.

He looked at the envelope.

Then at me.

And whispered:

“She remembered me?”
