WHAT WAS ATTACHED TO THE SHEET

PART 2 — WHAT WAS ATTACHED TO THE SHEET

On the white sheet…

There was a small envelope.

I stared at it for several seconds.

It wasn’t there when I left the room.

>

I was certain.

>

My hands began trembling as I reached toward it.

There was no name on the front.

Only three words:

“READ THIS ALONE.”

I looked at my husband.

He was still asleep.

My mother-in-law was lying beside him, completely motionless.

I quietly picked up the envelope and stepped into the hallway.

I closed the door behind me.

Then I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My heart dropped.

It showed my husband standing outside a building I recognized immediately.

It was his mother’s old house.

But the photograph wasn’t recent.

It had been taken several months before our wedding.

On the back, someone had written:

“Ask your husband what happened here.”

I felt a cold wave move through my body.

I walked downstairs and sat at the kitchen table.

For the first time since I had met my husband, I began questioning everything.

Why had his mother insisted on sleeping in our room?

Why had my husband acted as though it were completely normal?

And most importantly…

Who had placed that envelope on the bed?

A few minutes later, I heard footsteps.

My husband came downstairs.

He looked exhausted.

“Where were you?”

I held up the photograph.

His face changed instantly.

He stopped walking.

“Where did you get that?”

“From our bedroom.”

He stared at the photograph.

Then at me.

“Who gave you that?”

“I asked you a question first.”

He pulled out a chair and sat down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“My mother doesn’t know I have this.”

My stomach tightened.

“What is it?”

He looked toward the stairs.

“Not here.”

“Then where?”

He stood.

“Come with me.”

We walked into the garage.

He closed the door behind us.

Then he opened an old metal cabinet.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Bank statements.

Letters.

Photographs.

And one thick folder with my husband’s name on it.

I looked at him.

“What am I looking at?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“The reason my mother came to our wedding.”

I opened the folder.

The first page was a legal document.

The second was a bank statement.

Then I saw something that made my hands go numb.

A large amount of money had been transferred from an account belonging to my husband…

To an account belonging to his mother.

The date was only two days before our wedding.

I looked at him.

“You gave her money?”

“No.”

“Then why is your name on the account?”

He didn’t answer.

I turned another page.

There were several transfers.

All made over the previous year.

My voice became quiet.

“How long has this been happening?”

He finally looked at me.

“Since my father died.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

His mother’s control.

Her demands.

The way my husband always defended her.

The strange fear in his voice whenever she was angry.

But then I noticed another document.

It was dated three days before our wedding.

My husband’s face went pale when he saw it.

“No.”

“What?”

He grabbed the paper from my hands.

“Where did you find this?”

“It was in the folder.”

He read it again.

Then whispered:

“She wasn’t supposed to have this.”

“What is it?”

He looked at me.

And his next words made my entire body go cold.

“My mother didn’t come to our wedding because she was drunk.”

“Then why?”

He swallowed.

“She came because she knew something about me.”

“What?”

He looked toward the garage door.

Then lowered his voice.

“She knew I was planning to leave her.”

I stared at him.

“Leave her?”

“Yes.”

“And she threatened you?”

He nodded.

“Before the wedding, she told me that if I married you, she would expose everything.”

“Everything about what?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into the cabinet and pulled out another envelope.

“This is why I asked you to trust me.”

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a birth certificate.

I read the name.

Then read it again.

The mother listed on the document…

Wasn’t my mother-in-law.

I looked at my husband.

“Who is this woman?”

He closed his eyes.

“My mother has been lying to everyone for thirty years.”

I couldn’t speak.

Then suddenly…

We heard something fall upstairs.

My husband and I looked at each other.

Someone had been listening.

We rushed toward the staircase.

At the top, my mother-in-law was standing in the hallway.

She wasn’t drunk anymore.

She was completely sober.

And in her hand…

She was holding the missing photograph.

She looked directly at me.

Then she said quietly:

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”

My husband stepped between us.

“Mom, it’s over.”

She smiled.

“No.”

Then she looked at me.

“You think you’ve discovered the truth?”

She slowly shook her head.

“You’ve only discovered the first lie.”

And before I could respond…

She pulled another envelope from inside her robe.

“This,” she said,

“is the real reason I needed your bed last night.”

I stared at the envelope.

Because written across the front…

Was MY NAME.
