PART 2: The Warning Lily Was Terrified to Give Me
Lily’s words stayed in the room long after she stopped speaking.
“Too late for what?” I asked.
She looked toward the hallway again.
“I heard Mrs. Hale talking on the phone,” she whispered. “She didn’t know I was nearby.”
My heart began beating faster.
“What did she say?”
Lily hesitated.
“She said you wouldn’t be a problem much longer.”
For several seconds, I simply stared at her.
Then I forced a nervous laugh.
“Vanessa has been angry with me lately. Couples say things when they’re upset.”
Lily shook her head.
“No, Mr. Bennett. This wasn’t an argument.”
She reached into the pocket of her uniform and pulled out her phone.
“I recorded part of the conversation.”
My hands suddenly felt cold.
“Why would you record it?”
“Because I was scared.”
She pressed play.
At first, I heard only static and distant voices.
Then Vanessa’s voice came through clearly.
“I’m tired of waiting. Everything needs to be finished soon.”
Another voice replied, but I couldn’t recognize it.
Vanessa continued.
“Once Walter signs the papers, the house will be ours. And after that, nobody can stop me.”
My stomach dropped.
I looked at Lily.
“What papers?”
“That’s what I don’t know.”
I stood and walked toward the window.
Ravenswood Estate looked peaceful beneath the moonlight.
For years, I had believed this house represented everything I had built with Eleanor.
Now, for the first time, it felt like a place I no longer understood.
Lily suddenly grabbed my arm.
“There’s more.”
I turned.
“She mentioned a doctor.”
“A doctor?”
“She said something about making sure you took your medication. She said if you became confused, nobody would question it because of your age.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Suddenly, dozens of little moments came rushing back.
The drinks Vanessa insisted on preparing herself.
The pills she sometimes brought to me.
The afternoons when I felt unusually tired.
The mornings when I couldn’t remember falling asleep.
I had blamed everything on getting older.
But now I wasn’t so sure.
“Lily,” I whispered, “why are you telling me this?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because my mother was once in a situation where everyone ignored her warnings. I promised myself I would never do that to someone else.”
Then she handed me another piece of paper.
“I found this in Mrs. Hale’s office.”
I unfolded it.
My name was printed across the top.
Beneath it was a list of financial accounts, properties, and dates.
And at the bottom was something that made my blood run cold.
A meeting scheduled for the following morning.
With a lawyer I had never met.
Lily whispered, “Mr. Bennett… I think tomorrow morning they’re planning to make you sign something.”
I stared at the paper.
Then footsteps echoed outside the study.
Lily’s face turned white.
Someone was standing on the other side of the door.
And then Vanessa’s voice came softly through the wood.
“Walter?”
I looked at Lily.
She put one finger against her lips.
Neither of us moved.
Vanessa knocked again.
“Darling, are you awake?”
I suddenly realized something terrifying.
She knew I was in the study.
And she might already know Lily was inside.
