PART 2: He Thought I Was Just a Passenger—Until the Flight Attendant Handed Me the Envelope
Adrian stared at me as if I had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
Vanessa looked from him to me, completely confused.
“Adrian,” she whispered, “who is she?”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
After twelve years of marriage, I knew that silence better than any confession.
It was the silence he used whenever he was caught in a lie.
Finally, he forced a smile.
“She’s… my wife.”
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
“Your wife?”
I looked directly at her.
“Yes.”
She turned toward Adrian.
“You told me you were divorced.”
“I was going to explain—”
“When?” I interrupted. “After the three-day romantic getaway?”
The passengers nearby began glancing in our direction.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“Please. Not here.”
I smiled.
“You didn’t mind lying to me here.”
He looked furious, but he couldn’t argue.
Then the flight attendant approached.
“Mrs. Bennett?”
I nodded.
She handed me a sealed envelope.
“Someone asked me to give this to you once you were seated.”
Adrian suddenly went pale.
“What is that?”
I looked at him.
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
Inside the envelope was a single document.
It was a bank transfer authorization.
The date was three days earlier.
The amount was enormous.
Adrian had transferred money from an account we had built together into a private account connected to Vanessa.
He had apparently planned to use part of our savings to finance his new life.
But there was something else.
At the bottom of the document was his electronic signature.
And beside it was a note from my lawyer:
“Do not confront him until you reach Evermere.”
I folded the paper carefully.
Adrian leaned toward me.
“Where did you get that?”
I looked him straight in the eyes.
“You’re asking the wrong question.”
“What question should I ask?”
I smiled.
“You should be asking what else I know.”
For the first time, Vanessa looked frightened.
“Adrian… what did you do?”
He didn’t answer her.
The flight attendant announced that we would soon begin our descent.
I looked out the window.
Evermere was only minutes away.
Adrian thought he was arriving with the woman he planned to start a new life with.
He didn’t realize I had already arranged something waiting for him at the airport.
And when the plane landed, there wouldn’t be a romantic getaway waiting for him.
There would be my lawyer.
A financial investigator.
And one final document that could change everything.
As we prepared to land, Adrian whispered something I never expected to hear.
“Please don’t destroy our family.”
I turned toward him.
“You destroyed it the day you decided I was too trusting to notice.”
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“And neither of you knows the worst part yet.”
Because the money wasn’t the only thing Adrian had been hiding.
There was another woman.
And she had contacted me the night before our flight.
