When We Landed, Adrian Learned the Money Wasn’t the Only Thing I Had Found

PART 2: When We Landed, Adrian Learned the Money Wasn’t the Only Thing I Had Found

The rest of the flight was almost silent.

Adrian didn’t look at me.

Vanessa didn’t look at him.

And I simply watched the clouds outside the window, knowing that the life I had shared with my husband for twelve years was ending somewhere above them.

About twenty minutes before landing, Adrian finally leaned toward me.

>

“Claire, please.”

>

I turned slowly.

“Please what?”

“I made mistakes.”

I almost laughed.

“Mistakes?”

He swallowed.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

He had no answer.

Then Vanessa suddenly whispered, “You told me she knew about the divorce.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“I never said we were legally divorced,” he muttered.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You said the marriage was finished.”

“It was complicated.”

“No,” I said quietly. “It wasn’t.”

I opened my phone and showed Vanessa a photograph.

It was Adrian standing outside a hotel with another woman.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“Who is she?”

Adrian’s face went white.

“She doesn’t matter.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“She might matter more than you think.”

Then I showed her another photograph.

And another.

Different cities.

Different dates.

Different women.

Vanessa’s hands began trembling.

“You’ve been seeing other women?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

For the first time, I felt sorry for her.

Not because she had been involved with my husband.

But because she was finally discovering that she had believed the same lies I had spent twelve years learning to recognize.

The captain announced our descent.

Adrian reached for my hand.

I pulled it away.

“Don’t.”

“Claire, I’m begging you.”

“You should have begged before you moved our money.”

His eyes filled with panic.

“What happens when we land?”

I smiled faintly.

“You’ll find out.”

The plane touched down at Evermere International Airport.

As passengers began standing, Adrian grabbed his duffel bag.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

I watched his expression change.

“What?”

He listened.

“No. That’s impossible.”

His voice became louder.

“You can’t freeze the account without my authorization!”

I looked out the window.

My attorney had been waiting for that call.

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

Vanessa whispered, “What happened?”

He looked at me.

“The account is frozen.”

I nodded.

“And the transfer documents have been secured.”

He stared at me as if seeing a stranger.

Then the aircraft door opened.

Two investigators and my attorney were waiting beyond the gate.

Adrian stopped walking.

One of the investigators stepped forward.

“Mr. Cole, we need to speak with you regarding several financial transactions.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“You planned all of this?”

“No,” I replied.

“I simply stopped protecting someone who had been betraying me.”

Adrian stood there, surrounded by people he never expected to meet.

Then my attorney handed me a folder.

“There is one more thing you need to see.”

I opened it.

Inside was a document bearing Adrian’s signature.

But it wasn’t a financial transfer.

It was a document he had signed months earlier that could completely change what happened next.

I looked at my husband.

For the first time in twelve years, I wasn’t afraid of what his lies might cost me.

Because I finally knew the truth.

And Adrian was about to discover that losing his wife was only the beginning.
