Protocol 7

Story Part 2 — Protocol 7

For the first few minutes…

Nothing happened.

Diane laughed.

Jessica whispered something to Brendan.

Even Brendan slowly began smiling again.

>

“You really think that little phone call scared us?” he asked.

>

I said nothing.

I simply sat there, dripping water onto the floor.

Then Brendan’s phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His smile disappeared.

“It’s the board.”

Diane frowned.

“At this hour?”

Brendan answered.

“Hello?”

He listened.

His face slowly turned pale.

“What?”

Everyone at the table stopped talking.

Brendan stood.

“That’s impossible.”

He listened again.

Then whispered:

“Who authorized this?”

The person on the other end answered.

Brendan’s hand began shaking.

He hung up.

Diane immediately asked,

“What happened?”

Brendan stared at her.

“They froze my corporate accounts.”

Jessica laughed nervously.

“That’s not funny.”

“I’m not joking.”

Before anyone could respond, Diane’s phone rang.

Then Jessica’s.

Then everyone else’s.

One after another.

The room filled with ringing phones.

I remained completely still.

Arthur had kept his promise.

Protocol 7 had begun.

A message appeared on my phone.

PHASE ONE COMPLETE.

I locked the screen.

Brendan noticed.

“Cassidy…”

His voice was different now.

“What did you do?”

I looked at him.

“Nothing.”

He shook his head.

“No. You did something.”

Diane suddenly stood.

“You can’t possibly have this kind of power.”

I almost smiled.

She was right.

I wasn’t supposed to.

For years, they had believed I was simply Brendan’s embarrassing former wife.

The pregnant woman they tolerated because of the child.

They never knew who had actually been paying their salaries.

They never knew whose signature appeared on the final corporate documents.

They never knew whose approval was required for the largest financial decisions.

And most importantly…

They never knew who owned the company.

Then the dining room doors opened.

Two attorneys walked inside.

Arthur was with them.

He looked directly at me.

“Ms. Cassidy.”

Everyone stared.

Diane’s face went blank.

Arthur continued.

“The board has formally recognized the emergency authority granted under Protocol 7.”

Brendan looked confused.

“Emergency authority?”

Arthur nodded.

“Effective immediately, all executive privileges connected to the Morrison family have been suspended pending investigation.”

Jessica stood.

“You can’t do that!”

Arthur calmly turned toward her.

“I can.”

Then he placed a thick folder on the table.

Brendan opened it.

His hands were shaking.

Inside was a corporate ownership document.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His eyes widened.

“No…”

Diane grabbed the papers.

“What does it say?”

Brendan couldn’t answer.

So Arthur did.

“It confirms that Cassidy holds controlling ownership of Morrison Global Holdings.”

The room went silent.

Jessica’s mouth fell open.

Diane stared at me.

“You?”

I finally stood.

Water was still dripping from my hair.

But I no longer felt cold.

“Yes.”

Diane shook her head.

“No. That’s impossible.”

Arthur placed another document on the table.

“The company was established through a private holding structure. Ms. Cassidy’s identity was intentionally concealed from the public and from most employees.”

Brendan stared at me.

“You owned the company?”

I nodded.

“For years.”

His voice cracked.

“Then why did you let me believe you had nothing?”

I looked at him.

“Because I wanted to know whether you loved me without knowing what I owned.”

He looked down.

“And you failed.”

The words landed harder than any slap.

Jessica suddenly stepped toward me.

“Cassidy, this has gone too far.”

I looked at her.

“You laughed when I was humiliated.”

She stopped.

“You helped make me feel worthless.”

She lowered her eyes.

“And now you’re asking me to stop?”

She didn’t answer.

Then I felt another movement beneath my hand.

My baby kicked.

I placed my palm gently over my stomach.

And something became crystal clear.

I wasn’t doing this for revenge anymore.

I was doing it because my child deserved to grow up knowing that cruelty has consequences.

Arthur looked at me.

“There is one more matter.”

I nodded.

“Go ahead.”

He opened another folder.

“This concerns the property, the financial transfers, and the documents Brendan signed while you were married.”

Brendan looked alarmed.

“What documents?”

Arthur looked at him.

“The ones that could expose where the missing millions went.”

Brendan’s face went completely white.

Diane whispered,

“Brendan…”

He didn’t answer.

I looked at him.

“You thought I was powerless.”

He stared back at me.

“But you never understood something.”

I picked up my phone.

“I was never powerless.”

“I was simply quiet.”

Then Arthur received another notification.

He checked his screen.

His expression changed.

“Cassidy…”

“What is it?”

He looked at Brendan.

“The authorities have just opened an investigation.”

Brendan’s chair scraped violently against the floor.

“Wait.”

He looked at me.

“Please.”

For the first time that night…

He was begging.

But I wasn’t finished.

Because Protocol 7 had only activated the first stage.

And the next stage would reveal exactly what Brendan had been hiding from me throughout our marriage.

A secret involving my unborn child.
