PART 2 — “YOUR WIFE WAS MY…”
The biker stared at me for several seconds before finishing his sentence.
“Your wife was my… lifesaver.”
I froze.
I had expected an affair.
A secret relationship.
Maybe a past I knew nothing about.
But those two words confused me more than anything else.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
The biker looked down at Emily’s name again.
“My name is Daniel,” he said quietly. “Seven years ago, I was riding home from work when a drunk driver hit me. My motorcycle went through the guardrail, and I landed in a ditch.”
He paused.
“I was dying.”
I said nothing.
“People drove past me for almost twenty minutes. Then your wife came.”
My heart began pounding.
“Emily?”
He nodded.
“She wasn’t supposed to be there. She had finished her shift early and was taking a different road home. She saw my bike, stopped her car, and found me barely breathing.”
Daniel wiped his eyes.
“She held my hand until the ambulance came. She kept talking to me so I wouldn’t lose consciousness.”
I stared at him.
“She saved your life?”
“She did more than that.”
Daniel reached into his leather jacket and pulled out a small, worn photograph.
It showed Emily kneeling beside a younger version of him in a hospital bed.
On the back, in Emily’s handwriting, were six words:
“Everyone deserves another chance at life.”
My throat tightened.
“After the accident,” Daniel continued, “I learned I had no family nearby. Emily visited me every week. She brought books, food, and those ridiculous little jokes she used to tell.”
Despite myself, I smiled.
“That sounds like her.”
“It was.”
He looked toward her grave.
“When she told me she had cancer, I promised I’d pray for her every Saturday.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“But she made me promise something else.”
“What?”
Daniel looked directly at me.
“She said, ‘Don’t let my husband know about you until he needs to hear this.’”
I felt my blood run cold.
“Why would she say that?”
Daniel slowly pulled another envelope from his pocket.
“Because she knew something about you that you didn’t know yet.”
My hands began trembling as he held the envelope toward me.
“It was supposed to be given to you after her death.”
I stared at my wife’s name.
Then I looked at the envelope.
And suddenly, I understood why this stranger had been coming every Saturday.
He wasn’t visiting Emily because he loved her.
He was keeping a promise.
And whatever Emily had written inside that envelope…
she had known I would need it someday.
