Homemade Aloe Vera Hair Oil: A Natural Hair Care Recipe for Healthy-Looking Hair

Homemade aloe vera hair oil is a simple, natural way to nourish your hair and scalp without relying on harsh chemicals. Aloe vera has long been valued for its soothing, hydrating properties, while oils help lock in moisture and add shine. When combined, they create a lightweight yet deeply conditioning treatment that can help improve the overall look and feel of your hair—making it softer, smoother, and more manageable with regular use.

Ingredients

  • 1 fresh aloe vera leaf (or 3–4 tablespoons aloe vera gel)
  • 1 cup coconut oil (or olive oil)
  • 1 tablespoon castor oil (optional, for thickness)
  • 5–10 drops essential oil (optional – lavender, rosemary, or tea tree)

Ingredient Notes

  • Aloe Vera: Fresh gel is best for maximum nutrients, but store-bought pure gel also works.
  • Coconut Oil: Lightweight and penetrates hair strands easily, great for most hair types.
  • Castor Oil: Thick and rich—helps give hair a fuller appearance but can be heavy, so use sparingly.
  • Essential Oils: Add fragrance and may support scalp health, but they’re optional.

Instructions

Start by carefully extracting the gel from the aloe vera leaf. Wash it thoroughly to remove any yellow residue, then blend the clear gel until smooth.

In a pan, add the coconut oil and heat it on low flame. Once slightly warm, add the aloe vera gel and stir continuously. Let the mixture simmer gently for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally until the gel blends well with the oil and the mixture slightly thickens.

Remove from heat and allow it to cool completely. Strain the oil using a fine cloth or sieve to remove any leftover pulp. Stir in castor oil and essential oils if using.

Transfer the oil into a clean, dry glass bottle and store it in a cool, dry place.


How to Use

Take a small amount of the oil and gently massage it into your scalp using circular motions. Work it through the lengths of your hair as well. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for deeper conditioning, then wash with a mild shampoo. Use 2–3 times a week for best results.
